I saw some on you tube that looked a couple of cm. There was a report of golf ball but I doubt hail got that big. Need a monster cb for that kind of hail.

"Oh no, not John and the stormchasers again - they're always going after storms. I think I'll slip away offshore and escape the meteorological papparazi."Storm did weakon as it approached CHCH, it saw me
Seriously, I think the flow was too westerly, so that prevented the storms from reaching any further north.
Doesn't look like any storms in Canterbury today. Did have a very brief heavy rain shower in central Chch earlier in the evening.

The NW which picked up before the fronts arrival killed any thundery development today, we needed it to stay fresh onshore NE right down south to about Timaru.
According to some of the news reports skylights and windows on cars were actually smashed or broken, so for that to happen the hail would need to be reasonably big so i would say close to golf ball size.
The Press this morning had an article about it and also saying birds sheltering in trees were killed also.
Time for some active low systems again from this weekend, also looks like an interesting low system early next week too for the South Island maybe thunderstorms on the cards again.
Cheers
Jason.

Would require very large hail, perhaps baseball size. I saw on the news cars had damage to bonnet and roofs, small dents.windows on cars were actually smashed or broken
I see you tube has several clips now of the hail

A question regarding the wednesday's cold front : between 18h/18h30 (I'll check the timing once back home) I was around Mount Vernon trying to see what was coming from the South and I noticed a cloud which, on the moment, I thought was some sort of an incomplete or weak shelf cloud covering a fair part of the sky and surrounded by heavy precipitations (or hail). It needed quite a bit of time to really develop and the best moment to see it was just before the wind started to blow from the South more than the SW, which litteraly "splitted" it when it was right above me.
I have a few pictures but they don't depict very well what I saw as I was under heavy sleet and had only my hand to protect my camera ...
Did anyone see such thing, or can you at least explain it to me ?
P.S. : I will post the pictures this evening. Yesterday I was too tired to do it after the "chase" ...

Here are the pics :
From the top of Rapaki Track : the city at the right, and the antenna on the left-hand side is the one close to the Sign of the Kiwi. The "shelf" cloud was "developping" just over it.

Showers over Governor's Bay and a tiny wee piece of that cloud at the top.

The cloud I was talking about and the sleety showers ... A big part of the cloud (junction between what's visible on the right-hand side of the picture and what you can guess on the left-hand side) is not visible on the picture.

What do you reckon ? Nothing special, or ... ?

Thanks for the pics Lacertae, they show a weak Cold Front. Moisture starved, dewpoints were 0 to 4C that day even on the NE. Interesting to see the solid (wintry) precipitation in a November sky.

Did you see the 'dent chasers' on TV1 news tonight. They travel the world chasing hail damage. These guys (aussies) said there were in Germany last week, Ashburton this week. They use a specialised technique for getting the hail dents out of cars

No I didn't although I watched the initial part of the news and the weather of course. I would of liked to see the item but too busy watering trees as there is no rain in this part of the country, sadly whilst other parts get drenchedNZstorm wrote:Did you see the 'dent chasers' on TV1 news tonight.
