Had a high of 30.8c here in Rolleston at 10.15am. Sitting on a very pleasant 26 at the moment.

Looks like its going to be a hot night. :B :B

Thats interesting to hear about the temperature variations between mid and south Canterbury, most likly because there is a band of high cloud which streams down from Mid Canterbury northwards stuck under a Northerly flow.
Had 2.7mm of rain last night hopefully some better totals tonight as the heavy rains attack the West coast and spill over.
I would have thought thunderstorms could have been a possibility tomorrow but now i am not so sure.
Cheers
Jason.

The weather is just getting worse now lots of heavy rain and a few strong northerly gusts of wind. Looks like it might continue like this all through the night and possibly tomorrow morning. Just went outside for a quick look around in the pouring rain. Our drive way is like a raging stream and also moved a bit of a slip that had fallen down over our drive way. The local fire siren is going off now probably because of either flooding or fallen trees.
I think it might be just an accident.

Yes, Kaikoura recording 90km/h winds last hour! Its somewhat clearer here in CHCH now with a stiff NE. The rain radar suggests that the chance of rain is getting lower and lower as it is clearing around the Christchurch area. Heavy rain in Milford with the highest tally for the past 5 hours with at least 7mm every hour.

The Low is very organised now down to 984hpa, there is a cold front hitting the West Coast right now which will bring the heaviest of the rains and possibly push spillover further east overnight.
Next 24 hours ahead will be interesting as low systems always surprise us some how.
Cheers
Jason.

And to think in Victoria, they're getting excited over a station recording 156mm in three days!

Oh just looked at the 6 hour forecast of precipitation for NZ and the SI is going to get brunt of it!
2 Inches it suggests!
The low has dropped pressure even more now down to 982.
Update: Metservice thinks it is possible to get 24 mm for the SI
Looks like all predication models were wrong- but you never know with rain- it would be very hard to predict how much rain would fall especially if it was made 3 day's in advance.

Nelson has picked up a good soaking from this system, up to 90mm so far. Kerikeri also very wet, currently pouring up there, 90mm in the last 2 days there. Although the radar has stuffed up now I see the rain was moving down from the NNW which may mean some heavy falls still to come for Auckland overnight. A useful 21mm here over the last 2 days.

WOW that front went through faster than I expected. Now there is a blue sky overhead.
Some clouds with vertical development are apparent in the Waikato, looks like they are growing too....
Whats happening in Aucky- looks similar?

Yes, just 18 mm here from about 6pm to 2am last night. In the Gulf, Tiritri was recording gales until about 1am, with mean-winds of at least 76 km/h at 10pm. Sunny and calm here this morn though.

Interesting watching the overnight temps in S Canterbury. Chch Aero was all over the place - went back up to 26°C at 5pm before easing to 18°C at midnight, then up 23°C just an hour later. Timaru Aero was still on 27°C at 7pm and didn't drop past 20°C until after 4am (similar pattern at Dunedin Aero - just a degree or two far behind).

Bit of heavy flooding in Nelson and Golden Bay late yesterday...

It's been a windy morning here N-NW winds gale force at times, rattling the house abit.
Wind is more W-NW now with some low topped Cumulus clouds spilling across from the Alps.
Cheers
Jason.

Another warm mild blustery day with cloudy and sunny periods. Peaking to 27 in some parts of city but 24 mean temp. Looking at the 6am radar this morning shows some hevay falls just inland from CHCH around the darfield area! We once again have missed the lot and remain very dry!

Vertigo, that is what I thought Auckland might be getting.
As for Waikato just lower cloud cover, doesn't look like anything would eventuate for the Waikato as there is no heat apart from what the clouds are trapping in. Humidity is through the roof here.

Looking at the Whenuapai sounding suggests that more heating was never going to suffice today*. 500hPa temperatures look in the region of -10C, that's quite useless.
*Unless an upper trough went through at some point to lower the upper temperatures.

Err... hold on, what time did the first front go through Auckland today? That sounding might be pre front.
