Is it fair to say summer arrived early this year with troughing north of NZ and the Westerlies retreating further south. We had an early start to summer last year but often a spring like weather pattern can run through to Xmas or NewYear.

Once again. Very little from this front to date with 0.8mm overnight in the form of light drizzle showers. Heavily overcast all day today with strong NE. However, no rain or precipitation has formed. The last 2 months have been very dry indeed and the last 3 weeks we have only had 1mm!!! That shows how dry it has been here in the garden city! We have had several days in the mid twenties and couple of times around 30-31 degrees! The lawns are looking very brown and its only the first day of summer now! Not looking like anything decent anytime soon either. Today looked as if we would have rain or drizzle for most the day as most the country is under a weak front that is bringing widespread drizzly rain, however, it seems we are missing it all again. South Canterbury judging by rain radar has had some lengthy light rain which will be something at least for them but little further north here we are still awaiting something that is going to deliver more than 1mm! Gusty NW later in the week = high temps !

Persistant falls moving down from the north by the looks of the 5pm rain radar so hopefully some needed rain soon.
But yes it does look like it will be a dry month, hopefully some storms once we hit storm season.
Looks like a low-moderate shot for otago and south canterbury tomorrow late afternoon/evening as pointed out by the MS although not on thier thunder outlook as it only shows two maps and not three.
The pressure will be high around 1000hpa but i believe that factor diminishes as you get into the peak when storms form under most conditions at this time of the year.
Cheers
Jason.

First of December, today, the first day of summer WOW
...and it hasn't been sunny
...also it came onto rain from 5:15pm, the best we have for ages, well through Spring
None of this patchy rain crap either, but on saying that, not a deluge.
Will it be a wet summer?

A bit of a grey day for Auckland after a spectacular weekend. Sundays airport maximum of 25.5C is close to a November record for that location. I think the old record is 25.5C as well.

yes, does look to be some conditional instability over east Otago tomorrow. If there is strong surface heating and a decent sea breeze an isolated cb/ts could develop.

Stupid having the 1st as the start of summer,It should be the 22nd ,March the 1st is more like summer than the 1st day of autumn too.

Good to see northerners getting some summery heat in their temperatures.
Makes a change from the south. <3

Only 1.5mm over night here in rangiora so that is of no use to the big dry.

interested to see what some of the other YTD rain totals are. I am currently 539mm. Local farmers are pretty concerned.

Yes, we did get the best amount of rain in just under a month here but that only came to 2.2mm! Still no where near what we need here. We need a day where we get around 20mm or so. Once again today its beautiful with not a breath of wind and already 21 degrees! Hardly a cloud in the sky now just some very thin high cloud to the east. With a day like this, the little rain we did get yesterday will count for nothing at all as today will dry out any moisture we did get. However, ya gotta love the warm hot fine weather!!!

Possibility of thunderstorms later mainly south of Christchurch, but still elsewhere should experience heavy showers with enough to bring a good 10-15mm or so in a short space of time.
Thats the highlight of being in summer it can be dry as a bone and then you get convective activity which dumps alot of rain.
Last nights 3.1mm of rain will act as a moisture builder on the land, although going by the radars the more persistant rain stuck around the coast north of Christchurch and towards Cheviot area, most of this staying out to sea.
Cheers
Jason.

You must be joking. We would have lost twice that much today in evapotranspiration in the NWer.
