Isolated Thunderstorms possible,Otago & Canterbury 2,4 Dec!!

Unread post by Storm Struck »

As I discussed before in the other topic it should be a good day for storms especially south of Christchurch, but even anything north of Christchurch could turn heavy for awhile.
Lots of CU developing out there now to the West and SW, but as noted by the MS it looks very favourable for Dunedin today.
Also caught this photo of a CU cloud with some good uplift going into it.
Cheers
Jason.

Took some pics of the Impressive clouds developing at the moment over southern Christchurch. Both in the west and about the port hills!! I cant find out how to get them onto here as they do not have a internet url they are just on my desktop. If anyone can tell me it would be much appreciated! Cheers

Re size your photo's so they are smaller than your origional shot, usually you can do this either on your digital camera or via Photoshop etc.
Then when you go to post here below it says upload attachment, click on that and add the file Gif image name it then add the file.
Place your cursor where you want the picture to go on the post, then click place inline and a url image wording should appear.
Do this for a maxiumum of 5 photo's per post then click submit.
Yes that low cloud was around here but has now dissapeared again Lacertae so it should clear near you soon.
Lots of very nice developent to the SW now, and some smaller CU above.
Edit: thunderstorm active around North Otago now with some purple on the radar some perhaps large hail eek  .
Cheers

Gusty NW here now so it looks like any thunder chances will be waved down now for sure, maybe a heavy shower on the SW change later.
That same storm has kept on going for awhile throwing out strikes every so often, well done to MS getting that area spot on.
Up to 25C now with that NW.
Cheers

oh your right Jason. I agree the wind is northerly here now and 26 degrees. I hadnt even realised till i read that from you. I just assumed it was the same old northeasterly but yes definately a little warmer still. Rain Radar shows a few heavy showers developing in random areas along the east coast from Dunedin northwards.

Dunedin "Lookout Point" fire station hit by lightning and a house roof damaged about 5 mins ago (17:05 2 Dec) Currently a storm overhead.
Earlier I went for a fly up towards Leithfield beach today and encountered fog at about 1500 ft to the deck at about 13:30ish.

I drove south until a place west of Rakaia, and on the way (south of West Melton) I took thoses pics before the cloud died :

And once in Rakaia I took this panoramic view, pointing south :

I felt a bit lazy about driving further south as I had no idea how far I would have to go ... :?

Storm still overhead. Radio crackling every 10 secs but was crazy before. Lots of in cloud strikes but I have seen some good bolts too. Constant heavy rain and lots of surface flooding.

Still lots of sferics, a couple of great flashes and booming thunder. No hail but big rain drops, just sitting in my car near St Clair and it continues. Scanner is busy

Was a rather impressive quick building storm today at work just south of Invercargill, coming back from smoko and it was fine and sunny, 10mins later its pouring with wind-driven rain. Was a bit of thunder but I didn't here it (in the freezers where its loud). Was amazing how quick the weather changed.

Yes wouldnt say no to them either i agree. The rain Radar shows some heavy stuff just south out to sea but its reforming and going all over the show so still a chance. Some red showing too!

Mind you the 6pm radar shows a really decent area of heavy rain but moving from North Otago out to sea. Looking less and less likely now :(. Nevermind! Another chance on Thursday :D

There is a pool which will move up this evening once the flow swings more SW up this way, but otherwise the chances do look minimal.
That westerly has got quite strong here now gusting up to about 60kmh atleast, which is a real ruiner for any convective development.
Thursday looks more of an inland event if anything, and the SW change doesnt go through until 1am Friday morning.
Cheers

Looks to have been a nice amount of lightning out to the west of Dunedin today. That hill country west of Dunedin is a breeding ground for thunderstorms in December.
