First 2 Weeks of December 08
Once again this morning in Christchurch we have a warm start with it already 22 degrees as at 10:50am. There is more cloud about today than yesterday but the wind is more North than NE. The metservice have forecasted 24 as the high but i think 27 is on the cards today, especially when the sun gets out of the high cloud it is currently in. The next week looking a warm and dry one overall too!!
Make that 25.3 degrees at 11:40am

On the way back from the DoC office in Sockburn I took a few pictures of the same cloud with some Kelvin-Helmholtz waves :

Tomorrow should be a warm day for Auckland with temps topping 25C so summer is well and truly here.
Excellent pics of the KH waves.

Re: First 2 Weeks of December 08
Its 24.3 degrees at the moment out there and expected high of 25. Once again high should be bumped up to about 28 degrees or so. There is more cloud around today but still. Big CU clouds around especially out to the west, heaps of them too!! It looks very impressive!
Here are some pics taken before at 10:10am. Unfortunately not the best as clouds some distance away and obstructed by housing to get some of the better ones. Picture 2 cloud right above house however.

Re: First 2 Weeks of December 08
Temperature has been hovering around 24 the last 3 or so hours due to high cloud trapping the sun. However, shortly the sun is going to escape from the high cloud and i think we will see temps climb quickly towards 27 or 28 degrees. Currently 24.6 degrees with an average temp from midnight of 20.6! Ill edit this post in an hour or so to see how much warmer than 24.6 degrees we get. Ill predict 28
2pm = 28 degrees at CHCH airport and Metservice home page showing CHCH hottest in country with 28 as well

Re: First 2 Weeks of December 08
Up to 29 degrees here now with a 50km/h NW. I see it is now 30 degrees in Napier. After 3 warm/hot days here we will feel the southerly change tonight alright but i wouldnt be surprised if it was a dry one and just brought a few showers to inland areas.

Some more K-H this morning + some cirrus iridescence and very funny looking lenticular (if they are still lenticular when the NW is blowing ...), but as I'm just back from Cust after a loooooong tiring day I will post the pics only tomorrow ...

Re: First 2 Weeks of December 08
A nice cb blowup well out to the N of Northland on IR satellite this evening. Big dewpoints up there. There will be some conditionally unstable air across northern regions tomorrow with that weak upper trough/front but there doesn't seem to be much to push the air up.
GFs is consistent with some instability eventuating early to mid next week over the upper NI. Upper air looks too warm but surface dewpoints are modeled to be quite high.

Re: First 2 Weeks of December 08
Was it the cirrus catching the sun Brian?
Looks like a weak trough trough moves across the country Tues/Wednesday with rain for many places though I doubt we'll get much in Auckland. Very little in the way of upper level support points to a rainfall fizzer for the north. Eastern South Island areas may catch a soaking if the flow goes onshore. There is model agreement on an upper trough crossing the country at the end of the week, so a chance of convection then perhaps though the GFS is keeping LI's above zero atm due to an E/SE flow.
While the weather is currently uneventful it is nice to be getting the blue dome skies.

Re: First 2 Weeks of December 08
The latest Metservice rain maps show Christchurch getting a decent rainfall this time from tomorrow night through to early wednesday morning. Possibly one or two heavy falls in amoungst. At least looks like definately going to get something for once and not miss any forecast rain or showers. Remembering only 3mm in nearly the last 4 weeks! We will just have to wait and see, but looking a lot more widespread as this low is looking like packing a punch but also quick moving as well.

Sounds like an accurate forecast temperature wise. Not sure about your rain though today.melja wrote:My hopes for rain are not high at all, 21deg here this morning at 7am with a N N/W blowing and i dont think we get much rain from the NW oh and todays high was only ment to be 20deg yeah right.
Looks like the end of the week/weekend might spin up a low and give some rain to Gisborne and Hawkes Bay, that would be very welcome if it comes off!
