Any guesses what the weather for the first test in Dunedin is going to be over the five days?

Looks like a black out.
Rain or drizzle risk Thurs - Sat, more time to spend in the Gardens Hotel.

Yes, looks like the flow will be onshore the whole time, so drizzle likely. No N'Westers.

TV1 Sports News mentioned that there'd been hail in Dunedin overnight, drenching the cricket pitch.

I had no idea December was Dunedin's wettest month! Guess it's not paying off at all well for NZC.
It looks like a marvellous ground for test cricket though at the University - beautiful lush green surrounds and spectator view looks superb.

There are a good number of places from mid-Canterbury southwards (including some of the eastern Alpine areas) to south Otago where December is the wettest month on current 30-year (1971-2000) averages. Also for a significant portion of the central North Island. In some of these regions the seasonal variations in average rainfall are small, but in lowland South Canterbury and Central Otago there is a marked contrast.

Even I could have told NZC that Dunedins wettest month is December. Summer doesn't really come to Dunedin till New Years. Last year the Cricket Test was in January and we had five days of sunshine. This year I'm not going to the test because I know I'll end up sitting there in the rain waiting for the sun to come back out. Instead I'm sitting in the lounge dry and warm watching the Cricket.

The Nor- Easter that likes to run down the SouthIsland East Coast in Summer is a real killer of a nice day and North Dunedin is right in the firing line for it.

While the sports writers are busy putting the boot in, it's a fact that while University Oval was not a good venue, and December is not a good choice of month for Dunedin (but there are always exceptions - 2002 & 2003 would have been fine for cricket most of the time), the various media smart-alecks and the WI touring party might care to remember the test match at Napier, 25-29 March 2003. WI batted, and only 79 overs were bowled - rain and bad light put paid to the rest of it.

Dunedin was unlucky to get such a bleak run of weather to coincide with this test.

Weather for the Napier Test is looking very good .

Just as well it'll be OK at Napier, but too late for NZ's cricket ranking - I think they had to get a 2-0 result in the series to swap places with WI. My date above was a typo - should have been 2006.
