Looking at this tracker you can clearly see strikes up around inland rangiora and also off the timaru coast.

Matches up with the rain radar images too.

Comparing those strikes with the MetService Lightning Detection Network, I think the tracker has the direction correct but the range totally wrong. Those strikes are actually over northern Westland and inland Buller. Cheers.

Thick drizzle falling in the city at the moment and current rate of 2.4mm. Main rain band out to sea but drizzle may linger around the hills and city for a few hours. Up to 34mm here now. That 40mm i was talking about 2 days ago is possible. Adenfield lake is being tested!

What lake at Aidensfield? I didn't know there was one. I work at the SJOG hospital where I have a rain-gauge. Will be interesting to see the total there when I go to work on Monday. :D

I think it's one of those subdivision lakes where all the drainage water goes.

Looks as if some of the more general rain may reach the city within next hour or so moving up from south as shown from 9pm - 10pm radar. Still falling at 3mm/h with steady moderate drizzle. Now up to 43.4mm. Maybe 50mm on the cards now before midnight.

No significant rain during the day here yesterday, but managed 5.6mm mostly between 6pm and 8pm. Very-strong N-erlys (mean-winds over 50 km/h) around the Waitemata Harbour and Hauraki Gulf yesterday though. With broadside winds, the ferry-trip took a few 'greenies' over the bow. Bit calmer this morn and a little overcast with the odd very slight drizzle.

Latest model runs this morning have that subtropical low moving down over the north island...perhaps with some good rain?

East/South East flow so Auckland will miss out.

It sure did whip up around 4pm last night, with winds becoming strong and gusty from the south.
Also turned very dark grey black skies, with a real drop in temperature and big drops which almost looked like sleet.
Up to 28mm here since Friday mornings wee spell of rain as well, which will keep the gardens happy and some greener grass perhaps.
Looks like a few afternoon showers with a southerly change on Christmas Day now, and maybe another change later on Boxing day.
Cheers
Jason.
