I'm sure the upper air will be too warm aloft today for convection Tornado Tim. Tomorrow we may see some upper level cooling in time for late day heating so I have a low thunderstorm risk in for later tomorrow.

A picture of the sunset last night. The HDR doesn't help much again but well ... a wee bit ...
And for the fun a picture of the city, HDR, from the Sign of the Takahe :
My apologies for the quality of my pictures lately but they are mainly exercises for me, good training to learn how to master the tone mapping and the HDR shooting. You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Re: A Period of Hot, Dry Weather - Early January
Temperatures after being stuck on 23 for most the day are just starting to climb now as a northerly wind is picking up replacing a very light NE. Now up to 28 in City Centre and around 26 at jeffs. Possibly may hit 30 degrees in the next hour or two when the sun gets past the NW arch and comes out. It would be good to reach 30 degrees for 3 days straight.
Oxford and Rolleston have reached 30 degrees with 29 in the City Centre now.

More like 24.5C out here.Razor wrote:29 degrees at 6pm...yeee haaaa
Not that warm out here because of constant cloud cover, today.
Today's figures will be put up in my weather blog, not here.

Humid North Easterly here today with cloudy warm conditions. Dewpoints around 18C means we are in for one of those sticky Auckland nights.

Re: A Period of Hot, Dry Weather - Early January
Front is really organising itself down south at the moment going by the radars, also lots of mid level CU tops towards the W-SW so looking very promising for some decent rain.
Another warm one today although obviously nowhere near as hot as yesterday was with just 26C while the sun made a brief appearance before.
It almost feels like something stormy should happen after 4 days of warm temperatures throughout the region not even cooling down at night.
With a cooler airflow coming up and hitting this heatwave of air one would begin to ponder.
Cheers
Jason.

Re: A Period of Hot, Dry Weather - Early January
Yes that's what I'm expecting...we got up to 26.8C here this afternoon - the temperature was over 25C from about 10am through to late afternoon so indeed a muggy warm day. 22.9C right now with decent cloud cover suggests temps might struggle to fall below 20C tonightspwill wrote:Humid North Easterly here today with cloudy warm conditions. Re: A Period of Hot, Dry Weather - Early January
Ive been watching the models over the past 12 hours and rainfall totals are looking very skinny now. They have pulled back big time and maybe only a few light showers overnight and first thing, if that!

Id back away from any risk of storms for Christchurch now, i thought maybe an outside chance yesterday but not now.
Probably come in with a lovely cool S breeze and bit low cloud

Yes after the exciting and interesting weather events to start of 2009, I think, things will settle down from now on. Back to not very interesting weather here in the South Island for the next couple of days into next week, sadly

I wouldnt rely so much on models mark, yes they do give us an idea of what might happen but they often miss alot of other factors that can enhance precipitation.
Southerly has just hit here which will be nice to feel a cooler breeze, second front overnight should bring some steady or heavy showers for awhile.
Cheers
Jason.

Been WSW for a while now, with temperatures cooling down.
I had to put a jersey on to go out and cover the horses whereas, over the last couple of days I have been just about naked because of the heat

Re: A Period of Hot, Dry Weather - Early January
No rain overnight and some light drizzly showers here at the moment hopefully clearing very soon. Forecast from Metservice is cloudy periods and few showers possible at first then fine. Its raining heavier now. Radar not a lot on so hurry up rain and go away!

Chance of a shower today for the Cricket which is very fitting for this series.
Warm humid weather here, West Indies will be feeling right at home.

Re: A Period of Hot, Dry Weather - Early January
Dry as a bone over this way unfortunatly, i thought the front may have come with better omph overnight but ohh well.
Start of the week will most likely see the typical inland heat showers, Tuesday looks especially good for inland Mid to North Canterbury and Marlborough with maybe something turning heavy and thundery.
Sure is great to wake up this morning to no heat.
Cheers
Jason.

Re: A Period of Hot, Dry Weather - Early January
I can well beleive its about to turn hot again....high cloud buildups towards the SW indicate incoming NW flow
Could be an interesting storm system through Canty this weekend....maybe the 2nd decent rumblestorm for the season on the way?

VEry dry again here now, as bad or worse than in mid-December before that rain event. We've had over 80mm of evapo-transpiration here already this month, and we're not even half way through!

I'm thinking the same Razor, perhaps on Sun afternoon / evening.
Missed the last one dammit, saw it floating out to sea as I was driving through Nth Canty. Got some heavy rain in Kaikoura for a time on the way back but that was the worst of it.
Cheers
Aaron

I missed that last one too, was in Blenheim wondering if it was going to bring much, but apart from a morning shower there was nothing, not even a real wind change.Aaron J Wilkinson wrote:I'm thinking the same Razor, perhaps on Sun afternoon / evening.

This weekends system looks like it might be arriving too early in the morning on Saturday for Thunder in Canty, but looks like a good splash of rain, especially down Otago way
In the meantime, hot NW on the way....
