Anticyclonic conditions late Jan/early Feb
Looking like an extended period of mainly dry weather coming up for at least the next 7 days starting tomorrow (North Island mainly). Should be some warm sunny days, maybe reaching 27 for parts of Auckland as an estimate. Hopefully we will have light sea breezes instead of a southwesterly every afternoon (which affects the potential high temps for the day)

Re: Anticyclonic conditions late January
Have just looked at todays temps around NZ cool for the time of year especially down south. Come back summer.
Re: Anticyclonic conditions late January
These cool temps are pretty typical in an NZ summer, in these transition situations with a high moving in from the Tasman. No big deal really, since the heat will be back on soon enough. And yes, looks like pretty light winds on the horizon for Auckland for the forseeable future.

Re: Anticyclonic conditions late January
Hardly any wind here allowed the temperature to reach 26.3C a short while ago, but as usual, on a forecast fine day, the clouds have blocked the sun away and temperature is falling.

That is still "fine".David wrote:Hardly any wind here allowed the temperature to reach 26.3C a short while ago, but as usual, on a forecast fine day, the clouds have blocked the sun away and temperature is falling.

Re: Anticyclonic conditions late January
Yes Phil, I have seen you have mentioned cloudy patches.
Technically, fine is not the same as saying 'fine, some cloud' or similar. So when metservice says fine I will usually expect mainly clear sunny weather.
Reached a warm 26.5C here 4:17pm. Sat/Sun are looking to be quite warm I'd say, as long as the weather stays fairly sunny...

Re: Anticyclonic conditions late January
We had a weak seabreeze convergence line over Ak this afternoon, some locations may have had a lot of cloud but most remained mostly sunny. The convergence line has produced a few showers over central parts of Northland.Hardly any wind here allowed the temperature to reach 26.3C a short while ago, but as usual, on a forecast fine day, the clouds have blocked the sun away and temperature is falling.
Yes, I think with Met Service fine means mostly sunny weather, with the BOM fine means dry weather.Technically, fine is not the same as saying 'fine, some cloud' or similar. So when metservice says fine I will usually expect mainly clear sunny weather.

Re: Anticyclonic conditions late January
This is how MetService define 'fine', which I think is a fairly universal meaning...
The Australian BoM has a slightly more interesting interpretation...
It's been fine and mostly sunny all day here with a T-max of 26.1°C.
MetService Weather Terminology
Fine - Dry weather during which conditions are mostly sunny or bright. Even if there are scattered clouds or a thin veil of high cloud over the sky, shadows are cast by the sun most of the time.
The Australian BoM has a slightly more interesting interpretation...
Fine - (As used by forecasters) No rain or other precipitation (hail, snow etc.). The use of fine is generally avoided in excessively cloudy, windy, foggy or dusty conditions. In particular note that fine means the absence of rain or other precipitation such as hail or snow - not 'good' or 'pleasant' weather.
It's been fine and mostly sunny all day here with a T-max of 26.1°C.

Re: Anticyclonic conditions late January
Convergence line is further west today, lots of puffy cumulus. Fully sunny and 25.4C here but I see Grey Lynn is on 22C because of the cloud...

The Cumulus cloud line runs over my house today, very little sunshine here for the past few hours but clear skies just to the NE and SW, calm.

Re: Anticyclonic conditions late January
SW breeze will likely take the top Auckland's temperatures next couple of days. GFS plots some instability over the central North Island on Monday pm. This looks plausible atm as upper level ridge weakens a bit early week.

Re: Anticyclonic conditions late January
Beach suburbs will be very warm with out the NE sea breeze and a dominant air flow prevents a sea breeze convergence from forming over the isthmus. (over my house )SW breeze will likely take the top Auckland's temperatures next couple of days.
Not much in the way of humid weather for Auckland this January, very comfortable weather.

Another sunny and very warm day - reached 27.3 before 2pm, but has dropped to 25 now as the westerly freshens.

Re: Anticyclonic conditions late January
An amazing near 360 degree rainbow halo around the sun today. was there for a very long time (over half an hour) and then below the halo was a big fat hunk of cirrus that was all rainbow colours. (BTW i dont know my cloud names at all apart from the very basics) I took pictures on my phone bit did not pick it up. I let Tim know it was out there so hopefully he went and got some pictures of it.

Re: Anticyclonic conditions late January
Welcome back Jamie... Tim texted me about the halo, so I went outside, but down in the Sth Waikato the cloud formation and angle was different and didn't see one. Not sure if he took a photo or not?

Re: Anticyclonic conditions late January
Thanks to Tim we got the wireless repeator going today but the stupid thing still struggles to get it inside. Im going to have to move a few things around to get it working properly. Thats tomorrows job. We also found what we think is causing the lightning detector to not be working so sohuld get that fix well before the next lot of storms.
Nice hay making day today. warm and virtually windless.
