Not unprecedented though. On 6/1/73 forecasts for the Christchurch area (and probably for a larger zone, can't remember that part) for the following day predicted highs aorund the 40C mark, so that wasn't a bad effort.

Our long range forecasts have been consistently picking dry, warm and sunny for quite a few months
eg, from our November issue:

"We confidently expect weather patterns over the NDJ period to bring fewer than normal periods of westerly airflow over Canterbury, with more anticyclones than usual moving over the South Island. This pattern will bring reduced rainfall, increased sunshine, and warmer than normal temperatures for 2-3 months, and raises the possibility of a repeat of the challenging early summer patterns of 2008. Hard to know just how warm it will get on Sunday and Monday, but the forecast thickness and upper level temperatures are very warm indeed - THK values approaching 580 and T850 in excess of +20. Certainly the right conditions to lead to temperature records being set, which I guess means 40+deg is on the cards somewhere over those two days. :(

Wow! My parents have gone across to Melbourne today and tomorrow 44-45 degree is forecast there. Might get a taste of what they are. Ofcourse it wont get to 45 here but 40 would be an experience!

I just had a look at the upper level data for 7th & 8th Feb 1973 for Christchurch, the midday sounding for the 7th showed surface temp at +40 with pressure of 995hpa, 850hpa temp of +27, 1000-500 thickness of approx 592.

I'm not sure just how much of a lift the fohn effect gives to the forecast numbers we have from the model for Sunday/Monday (the GFS not really knowing much about the fohn effect in Canterbury at all) but I would have thought a lift from +20 to +27 on the 850Ts is not unreasonable, so that would put us in the same ball park. Cant see the THK values getting up above 590 though.

Oh hell well i hope its Sunday, so i can then go to the beach!! :D dam having to work on Monday with 40C heat bomb barding us.
Its currently reached 28C now with a light NE coming through, got rather gusty and cold last night.
Not the best night for sparks in the park i would of thought.

Rather cloudy now with thin high cloud and currently up to 32 degrees in Rolleston with a feels like temp of 36 degrees. Winds still more NNE at the moment. Temperature will push up with the change to Northwesters pretty soon i would imagine long as cloud doesnt increase too much.

Work Sunday 2:30-1am.. Getting a ride then and maybe I'll get to experience the heat of the day, Monday I might skate into work or bus (either must be suicide if these temps do happen :P ) Lucky I work in chillers..

Christchurch airport recording 30 degrees now as those winds are trying to turn NW still seem to be switching back to N or NE at times but in the past ten mins or so the wind has started getting gustier and plenty of sunshine now the cloud has completely cleared. Infact just as i type this Jeffs weather is showing the NW kicking in at 24km/h and a temperature of 31 degrees now.

Looks like the Met aren't forecasting 37 for Ashburton anymore, now heading for 34. Gonna be warm on the east of the North Island too, two 30 degree days lined up for Masterton Sun/Mon, Hastings forecast highs peaking at 32 on Monday, Napier peaking 31 on Monday and Gisborne peaking at 34 on Monday. I dont think I have ever seen the MetService forecast 34 for Gisborne :o

GFS 850mb temp chart for NZ 1pm Sunday. Should be a hot one for much of NZ. Hottest upper air from Masterton to Christchurch.

Temps like these can be challenging in Melbourne, especially for those without aircon. Exmouth had 2 X 44, 2 X 45, 2 X 46 and a 47 in January, with an average max of 40. I happened to be away, but experienced 45-47C crossing the Nullabor. It was not fun, even in an airconditioned car (the black dash soaked up a lot of heat and was way too hot to touch). Believe me, 40 is not much of an experience, especially with 30-40% r. humidity like we have today.

The hot weather not lingering down there like it did in January, looks like a decent cool spell on the way next week.

YES, my birthday is next week, so it's looks like the cooler weather may enduce some thunderstorm activity for my birthday. Now wouldn't that be a wonderful present :D \:D/

Dunedin again hit 30deg yesterday I think the high was expected to be in the mid 20s.
I have experienced 39deg in Thailand last January..(Northern winter) but the humidity was quite high as well.
It will be interesting to see what tomorrow brings up and down the country.
