Re: Subtropical low 27th Feb to 2nd Mar
Have just had some rather heavy rain here so definitly not over yet. So heavy that it caused puddels of water in the paddocks. Max rain rate was 60mm/h. That heavy burst bought us up to 40mm so far from this system with steady rain still falling. Im going to the rugby tonight and boy am i glad i got a ticket right up the back where its covered.

I think its over for Auckland. The cold front will keep the action out to our east. Some big cb's in there now. Watch out Coromandal/BOP!

Re: Subtropical low 27th Feb to 2nd Mar
It sure did come on fast Melja, the same situation here now with steady rain and nice big drops in the mix.
NE has been fresh up around 30-35kmh since midday but that is likely to strenthen by this evening.
3.1mm in the last 20 minutes so far.
Cheers
Jason.

Todays NZWP sounding. Air does look a tad unstable. Notice the wind shear there also.

Yes, one of those days unstable enough for embedded heavy showers but thunderstorms unlikely.

Re: Subtropical low 27th Feb to 2nd Mar
A warm afternoon here, only 23C but dewpoints above 20C, light winds here now, some light rain. Low cloud has cleared from Auckland this afternoon, ( still have high cloud cover) can see Cb/towering Cu tops moving down through the east.

Re: Subtropical low 27th Feb to 2nd Mar
Only 28mm rain so far from this system, and we've had light rain almost without a break until about 2pm. Most interestingly I thought was that this morning our windows at home (the ones sheltered from the rain) were drenched in condensation - on the outside!

Re: Subtropical low 27th Feb to 2nd Mar
If its not one thing its another - it has gone from not reading to going absolutely beserk - according to WD we've had 356mm of rain since 3am - yeah right !!!tgsnoopy wrote:Yay, Gary's rain guage finally started tipping again.

Note it currently reports 45.6mm in the last hour, just a wee bit wet there?
Pity it missed a lot of the earlier rain and still seems to have issues. I hope he didn't get up on the roof and deal with it in this weather and that if he did he got up and down ok (Big drop off his roof).

cobwebs that stop the tipping rain bucket in a certain place can cause those high rain values kaimaikid
yes, that conveyor belt of rain is just clipping the Hamilton area in the waikato, but just missing the auckland area...

Re: Subtropical low 27th Feb to 2nd Mar
The heavier rain belt moves through overnight Mark if you look at the maps.
The rain has eased back here only around 4mm so far.
Cheers
Jason.

Re: Subtropical low 27th Feb to 2nd Mar
Metservice must have expected that heavy rain band to be much further west, otherwise why issue a warning for so much rain - so how come that rain band stayed mainly offshore?
Has been spitting most of the day but not much extra rain since this morning, total around 30mm. A decent watering but nothing significant, as usual, because it is Auckland after all....

Re: Subtropical low 27th Feb to 2nd Mar
Raining nicely here out at West Melton with a ESE blowing at the moment. Good for the pastures whilst we are away.
As I don't like reading my rain-gauge whilst it is raining, I don't know the rainfall rate.

Re: Subtropical low 27th Feb to 2nd Mar
Don't count your chickens yet lads - metservice is still issueing warnings for the Coromandel and Bay of Plenty, saying to expect another 70mm from 4pm
Has been raining quite heavily here all day - at a guess I would say around 20-25mm per hour and still no sign of any let up
Brian - yup I should have used some fly spray up there in the rain box - thought I had evicted the local residents but obviously not
EDIT: Just added some bug killer and silicon spray as it was fairly wet inside...

Re: Subtropical low 27th Feb to 2nd Mar
Had 5mm so far but that big band of rain to the north looks like it has broken up and headed out to see and the weather maps show it heaviest at 7pm tonight. Unless the rain is just going to develop randomly on the radar from new formations, i dont know. Lower North Island shows an intensity occuring! I know we are going through this sub tropical low at the moment but Friday looks like yet another one looking at the weather map. A very deep low which was showing 942hpa in the southern ocean earlier today on top of all this is heading towards New Zealand but weakening a lot, and is due to hit later next week too. Wet, wild weather looks set to continue. A warm day here tomorrow though with gale force northerlies gusting to 90km/h norht of Ashburton.
