Re: Settled Weather Late March
Really was it nice where you were as well John what a coinsidence .
Yes a mild one today the temperature sat around 23C for most of the day under the arch, but now sun is out with a strong gusty NWer and 25C.
Maybe a splash of rain overnight will help keep any dust down flicked up by the NWer.
Cheers
Jason.

Was there any rain near Christchurch today? I took some photos around 2 o clock and it looked like it was raining in the distance, saw an anvil shaped cloud coming out of the arch..

Re: Settled Weather Late March
Temperature is dropping really fast here tonight, already 11.7°C, I'd say 7-8°C low for here if it stays clear and calm.

Looking at the lightning radar here...
Is there a thunderstorm up north or is that static pickups?

Re: Settled Weather Late March
Yes thunderstorms firing between Fiji and Vanuatu. If you have high pressure over NZ it will pick up the static nicely from the islands. On some nights it will plot them as far as the Solomon Islands.
The boltek is designed for storms at range within 600km or so, so doesn't get the distance right at all over that length.

Looks like the building high early week will bring in some quite chilly air, particularly for eastern regions. And GFS indicates frosts over inland South Island Wednesday/Thursday.

Re: Settled Weather Late March
Well it actually doesnt surprise me if temperatures did get that high down in Otago and Southland yesterday, as it was a strong Westerly flow down there especially in the upper levels where it would have been gale.
Ashburton got to 28C along with Timaru and Culverdon on 29C, it was also 24C here with a very light NE wind but you could feel there was a NWer higher up and perhaps more inland.
Abit cooler here today with the southerly flow from early morning and patchy cloud, wind is now NE though with some rain expected tonight so the southerly must be coming back later on.
Cheers
Jason.

Re: Settled Weather Late March
Interesting day here from noon.
Back to SW but then a convergence moved through during the afternoon, with clouding up and a return to NE.
In the meantime it must of been NE throughout in Christchurch.
This would be responsible for the clouding up over the area today.
With an impending anticyclone moving in over up to 1040hPa, might be interesting to what trails the upper trough when it moves over, later.

Re: Settled Weather Late March
Yes it has been very settled lately.. Should start to feel the coldness hit about mid April id say.
I wonder when we will have out first cold snap move through, Weather has been nice and particularly for where i have been working, but is a little boring

Re: Settled Weather Late March
Nothing in the way of rain recorded today as the front has worked its way up the east coast of the SI. We have had some splatty big drops but not enough to cover the concrete. Looks like much more rain for north canterbury with very isolated light rain further south here. SOme high cloud in a few areas most the morning. Barometer is at 1037hpa.
Looks like the westcoast of south is in for a battering from the weekend and into next week with heavy rain!

Re: Settled Weather Late March
Rather unusual weather here this morning, its been cool-mild with very light variable winds from the NW-N-NE with patchy light rain showers.
Just watched a convergence line come through with clouds swirling in all directions, i was on the look out for a funnel cloud but the towering Congestus didnt provide one.
A change in windshift to the SW as it went over with a good 5 minutes of steady-heavy rain, temperature has dropped now but there's no wind again .
Cheers
Jason.

Re: Settled Weather Late March
Just light winds and fairly overcast in Akld today, which makes a change from the full-on sunshine over the past week. Akld's sunshine hours look like they'll be about 130% of normal for the month, with about 50% or less of normal rainfall, most of which fell on the 5/6th. Also a cooler March in Akld with average T-maxs likely to be about 1.5°C below normal and average T-mins about 1°C below normal...

Re: Settled Weather Late March
Has been sprinkling consistently since around 3pm this side of town. Some very turbulent bases about an hour ago, didnt come to much but the grizzle became heavier about that time.
