Re: General May Weather
I am predicting a very foggy and cold morning tommorow as Fog is already over paddocks here.
Cold all day got to a max of 8.6°C So it has been in the single digits all day.

Re: General May Weather
one saving grace is that your DP is a bit higher than last nite?
so it wont get as cold ...?
wind has dropped here again (gone SE), and temperature dropping fast again (we got to 15.3C here today with the onshore SW)

Re: General May Weather
I see metservice have revised their forecast lows, now 3° for Auckland, so maybe near 0 here again in the morning if it stays clear....but the temperature is higher and falling more slowly so far this evening...

Re: General May Weather
Brr guys, those are cold temperatures in the Waikato!!
Since the WS move out to Jamie's farm it totally smashed the record low temperature.. and the previous record was set during July!
I think i'll be quite content with the chilly 17C minimum temperature forecast tomorrow here.
Edit: GO CHIEFS!!

Re: General May Weather
very light ground frost in waiuku (kids soccer at 8am)
DP is important, because it determines at what point fog/dew will form. at that temperature, the rate of temperature drop then decreases alot (due to latent heat)

I say if the Crusaders beat the Bulls then the Crusaders will win the super 14. The hardest part will be to beat the bulls in South Africa.

Re: General May Weather
Have to agree with Bob McDavitt's comments in this morning's NZ Herald article, 'Snow, rain and gales bring winter chill' by Trudie McConnochie, which says...
It also quotes Phil as saying...
Incidentally, in 2007, May nationally was the "warmest in over 140 years of temperature measurements" and Auckland had its equal highest May temp record.
Not sure I'd agree with a couple of the other comments though...These temperatures are typical of late May to early June so they've occurred two weeks earlier than normal.
Odd, because according to NIWA, Auckland's mean-temp last May was 12.7°C (1.2°C below normal). However, last May also saw anticyclones dominating (in the south) and sunshine hours in Auckland were well above normal.MetService figures show temperatures are only slightly cooler than last year. In Auckland, the mean temperature for May so far is 11.9 degrees, compared to last year's average of 13.6.
It also quotes Phil as saying...
Hmm... NIWA says Auckland's April mean-temp was actually 0.7°C below average. Nationally however, the average temp was pretty normal (0.1°C above average), i.e. "below average over much of the North Island (especially central and eastern areas), but above average in the south and west of the South Island".We had such a warm April but we've been robbed of autumn.

Re: General May Weather
That lines up well with my readings, I have an average here (to the 23rd) of 11.9°CMetService figures show temperatures are only slightly cooler than last year. In Auckland, the mean temperature for May so far is 11.9 degrees, compared to last year's average of 13.6.

Re: General May Weather
Nev - would be interesting to work out the main 6 or 7 centres combined - to reflect the temps for the majority of NZers. Not sure what the results would show though.
My comments re '"robbed of Autumn" were a combination of temps, general weather conditions in the main centres and of course the many, many, comments passed on to me every day - not simply a mathemathical equation.

Re: General May Weather
In terms of monthly average that is a lot of temperature difference.MetService figures show temperatures are only slightly cooler than last year. In Auckland, the mean temperature for May so far is 11.9 degrees, compared to last year's average of 13.6.
Its has been a cool/cold Autumn, March cooler than normal across much of NZ, A cool April for the North Island and a cold May for NZ. May has seen persistent cold weather

Re: General May Weather
Friday mornings reading at Auckland Airport of 1.7C was the second coldest May morning at the airport since recordings began in 1962. So some unusually cold weather occuring for these parts.

Re: General May Weather
The "robbed of autumn" is only valid in the sense that this has been a cold May. April temperatures were near average for NZ. But last May was actually the coolest since 1992 (though anticyclonic and very dry over a large area, also sunny). The difference quoted of "only" 1.7C between the 2 Mays so far, for whatever site it was, is a large one, so that statement is very silly. I expect this May will be the coolest since 1959 (1959 May was 0.6C cooler than May 1992)

Re: General May Weather
yes, anything over 1C difference for averages (for NZ) is significant, yes?
currently running 2.3 colder than normal (my data is only for since 2001 though), here

Re: General May Weather
Interesting about metservice's forecast and the way it turned out. 1mm of rain since 8am yesterday and nothing since about 3pm yesterday at all
