yeah 150mm in 12 hours made for a wet day, similar rates to when we had the two big floods in 2007, thank goodness it finally moved on around 5pm.

I went for a cruise around 1:30pm, a bit of localised surface flooding and rivers overflowing their banks in places, heard a rumour about one road being closed. Haven't heard how Kaeo fared, if they had similar rainfall amounts they would have had their town flooded again.

Thunderstorms/hail look on the cards for Northland, possibly north Auckland on Saturday. Will be able to make a more accurate prediciton by Friday.

A rude shock after some of the warm spells lately!
And still no sign of the sun...and no sign of double figures....maybe if the fog burns off later today we might be in luck.

9 days...?

I see Dunedin Airport was on -3C at 9am.

Some blue sky over Ak today, a cool 14C, May is usually a mild month for Auckland with 18C days not uncommon.

Low cloud stuck around here for the majority of the day and remained rather cool with a NE breeze, some welcome sunny intervals from 1-3pm got the temperature up to 10C  .
Tomorrow i think that cloud will dissapear altogether as theres a slight upper SW flow.
Hey Waterboy did it snow in Tekapo on Saturday because the webcams looked like a winter wonderland ;-) .

Which one was that? Turoa and Whakapapa don't open till the 20th and 27th respectively.

Yes the small club feild on Mt Taranaki has been open for 2 or 3 weeks I understand

As for us here...we've snapped our 9 day streak of single digit temps, and for the first time since last Tuesday I can see the sun!!!!

Yes, Manganui field on Mt Taranaki did open a couple of weeks back, saw this on TV ONE news, they were thrilled to be the first to open for the 09 season.

Better weather today for NZ, lovely morning in Auckland.

Is such triumphalism necessary? It's better left in the revolting political blog correspondence that the two large newspaper chains support. I like Tekapo a lot but nowhere's perfect - if Gary were still here he'd have a go at you.

Sunshine this morning after 5 straight overcast days - southerly storm followed by a "drizzler", which would rate dead last in my preference list for weather scenarios around these parts.

It did come in very fast as i remember looking at the sun setting around half 5 to the west and then 10 minutes later it was overcast and very bleak.
The temperature dropped quickly too from 12C to around 8C with a breezy southerly, almost like freezing fog \:D/ .
Other than that it was great to see the sunshine again.

Lifted index chart for Saturday night over NZ. Looks like some marginal deep layer instability over the upper North Island due to the cold trough/modest low level moisture. I can't see much dynamics with this but should be a few flashes/rumbles in the west of Auckland Saturday night. Also worth mentioning an isolated embedded thunderstorm risk with that front during Saturday.
