Was very cool Nev - I thought it was an air force plane from Whenuapai then as it moved closer it was clearly a triple 7. Big chunky CBs still around the city tonight... must be fun for the pilots!

The cb's also have intense turbulence and icing for aircraft.
Front looks like its taking shape out in the Tassie, nice crop of cbs building.

Re: Major Low Pressure system - 8th to 12th May
I have a feeling one can't privately 'buy' the data but is available to researchers for free use... and then obviously all the WMO members that would get all the data as contracted with the data-sharing they do. I agree with what you say regarding the GFS, but it's not that bad... Sure, it can be very shoddy with regard to progging sub-tropical lows over the North of NZ but can be excellent for progging cold outbreaks. It's not the worst, have you seen the outputs from BoM's GASP? That will make you constantly go ' '.Myself wrote: I wonder how much it costs to get all the output from something like the ECMWF?
Here's a good animation from today's 00Z ECMWF run which is currently available (for a limited time with rainfall), shows the revolving motion of the low very nicely... here
Would be 60C at ground level!Razor wrote: Haha its a heatwave!

Looking at your time of post, not sure but a bizjet came over about an hour before at radar lowest safe & he was fair hauling ass towards papakura, skirting abound a Cb on a long final to 23L.. thought myself for a moment it was a fighter of some sort. Also witnessed a Cathay Pacific A340 doing some amazing tricks on departure through the much photographed cell just after 4pm.. them guys up front sure have some balls!j--me--h wrote:off topic did anyone see that jet flying around the city 15mins ago... was very low and noisy as hell. looked like it flew right over towers in the city at one point.. i think it was a fighter jet but didnt thnk NZ had any????
Wx wise, not much to report here.. frequent blustery showers with the odd splashing of hail.. the 4 legged friends have been drenched, timber stacked, just awaiting the fun this weekend

Re: Major Low Pressure system - 8th to 12th May
Well gentlemen ( and ladies out there who maybe reading the weather forum )
Great picture's everyone... thank's for posting them, they are great visual's to see what's happening around the country, loved looking at the whole lot of them... UNFORTUNATELY... while everyone got to hear thunder in their repective part of the country, there was none of that here in the DB area... hmm...
Have a safe evening if your out there on those roads travelling... keep warm... take care.

I meant to say the screen in the cockpit, lolNev wrote:lol, think you mean the doppler is mounted in the nose Tim. Yes, what they're primarily looking for are microburts. The doppler should give them just enough time to take evasive action, which sounds like what Phil described.
Tomorrow is going to be very interesting....
I bet this forum will be on fire!!

Re: Major Low Pressure system - 8th to 12th May
Ill try and describe it... It didnt have engines mounted to the wings that i could see. Was moving very very quickly and i watched it fly in no real direction all over the show for about 20 mins. Was black and narrow and rather small. At one stage it flew directly at the sky tower then suddenly veered off.Dale Small wrote:Looking at your time of post, not sure but a bizjet came over about an hour before at radar lowest safe & he was fair hauling ass towards papakura, skirting abound a Cb on a long final to 23L.. thought myself for a moment it was a fighter of some sort. There was an intersting article in today's Christchurch PRESS in the Discovery section titled "Tracker the Twisters" about scientific research into the tracking of tornadoes in the USA.

The Lightning Radar is going Nuts!
Rain radar show moderate rain atm as well in localized spots probably associated with the CB's.

Re: Major Low Pressure system - 8th to 12th May
my boltec is not working at the moment because my weather pc died on me
and I am now using my Mac mini as a weather pc (running WD for the Mac)
So I need to get the usb version of the boltec (and get that to work on the mac) and sell my PCI version....someone here might like to purchase it?

Its a pity this front wasn't coming through in the afternoon when the airmass over land was a bit more unstable.
I can see the cb line out to sea from here.

Well i dont know what you guys in canterbury are thinking but i just cant see were we are going to get all this "BIG BAD STORM" weather from, way to warm for snow, very showery so not much rain.
I do hope that people dont get to disappointed but just remember this happens so often here in canterbury in winter-just remember what a SW wind does here

Is certainly looking like a fizzer for the south island...nothing but a normal early winter southerly spell.

I'd like to watch this one come in.
May get a gap from about 10 till 1, fingers crossed.
