Re: Major Low Pressure system - 8th to 12th May
Grounds, despite two fine days are still flooded in many areas and very waterlogged. Metservice are not forecastimg showers for CHCH but i would say showers will develop here overnight, i dont think there will be a frost like forecast. The models for last couple days have been showing showers for tomorrow. Around 100mm in the last 9 days in my area.
Very slow moving band to the south of Ashburton

Tgsnoopy, I just saw your videos. Awesome!! It seems that the Bay of Plenty is the place to be for decent hailstorms, so far this year.

Re: Major Low Pressure system - 8th to 12th May
I have had a flick back through 20 years of temp data for Auckland and couldn't see a first 12 days of May that comes close to being as cold as what we have had this year. Unseasonably cool. I guess the recovery in the temperatures later in the week will mean an 18C temp feels warm!DP's are plummeting! Its going to be cold tonight! Possible frost...

Re: Major Low Pressure system - 8th to 12th May
Yes, more normal temperatures back by the weekend. I had 6.6C here this morning. I see there is another round of showers to cross the NI this afternoon.
Return of warmer more moist airmass could mean the chance of a thunderstorm Friday over the upper North Island. That front coming across the Tassie Thursday will be undercutting the left over cold upper air so thunderstorms could develop in the central Tasman and these may reach northern NZ on Friday. No real dynamics with this, front would otherwise be weak on our lattitude, so have to see what does happen. Thunderstorm risk looks to be Taranaki north if it eventuates.

Temps warm up by friday across NZ but it will be cold again next week ( below the average) with a High moving slowly onto the SouthIsland.I have had a flick back through 20 years of temp data for Auckland and couldn't see a first 12 days of May that comes close to being as cold as what we have had this year.

Re: Major Low Pressure system - 8th to 12th May
Yes a stunning day here i Christchurch. 3 fine days of weather now and still there is snow on Mt herbert out the back of the port hills. Which is only a tiny bit higher so it snowed heavily around 500m or so when it did obviously. Looks like fine weather to continue and warm weather Friday onwards possibly low 20's! Got to 15 degrees today but felt more like 18 with the weather we have had . Maximum gust only 12km/h all day long. Very still indeed. At one stage i was outside and i could almost feel my skin burning, havent felt that for a while Probably time for a new thread anyhow, maybe for this next low as it looks like smashing the west coast of the south , its a pitty we dont have many living in Westland or buller on here . Gales probable for Wellington, Malborough and Canterbury for the weekend.

Re: Major Low Pressure system - 8th to 12th May
Thanks for the report Brian. Shame the Franklin County News story isn't accessible online. Just curious, does it say if anyone managed to eyeball the alleged 'tornado'?Manukau heads observer wrote:I see the local newspaper reports a house in Tuakau had roof and other property damage from a small tornado on saturday night (just after midnight)
Also, looking at MetVUW's 12am radar and 3am radar images for Sunday morn, I wonder if a brief pre-frontal squall might've been more likely?

Re: Major Low Pressure system - 8th to 12th May
Looking back, it didn't turn out nearly as wet and stormy as was originally predicted for Canterbury. Rather than a whole week of cold wet weather, it was really only inclement on Friday, and from Saturday evening through Sunday. Looks like Chch/Central Canterbury was in the 'eye of the storm' at other times.
