Two radar sites

The MetService is considering two Far North sites for a radar station, to complement the the five it already has around the country, one on Department of Conservation land at Te Paki and the other on a farm east of Kaeo.

Project direcor Tony Quayle told the FNDC last week that the new station would be one of four, which would enhance weather forecasting ability.

The station, Mr Quayle said, would need an unobstructed site.

A resource consent would be required, and no decision had been made regarding when construction was scheduled to start.

The station was expected to be comissioned in 2011 or 2012, and would cost between $2 milion and $3 million.

In response to q query from the council, Mr Quayle said lighthouses rarely had the 320km horizon required by a radar station.

The Cape Reinga lighthouse would certainly not be suitable, given that it was sited on the side of a hill, vastly
reducing a radar facility's sweep.

The right terminology lends a hint as to the nature of the different forms.
A Vertigo Quote.
