Some beaut gusts coming through now alright although nothing major as of yet well no different to the other night.
Raining here now gradually getting more steadier, take a look at the hook on the 1pm radar.

The scattered light rain forecasted for Oamaru has gone from light to moderate and now bursts of heavy rain 11mm since 0600. A number of areas have ponded water and getting a tad soggy . Rained almost every day since the 5th May

I see Banks Peninsula has been doing its regular sheltering effect over ChCh city today. Its high time that the folk started taking that into account for ChCh forecasts- I would say a fair amount of the 'heavy rain' warnings issued for ChCh city fail to eventuate due to this effect.

Yes, this is an absolute joke! Only 8mm has fallen and its clearing and radar shows big clearance for the city atm too. Stupid!

MetService, on their website, tend to localize general warnings on their SWW probably just to alert people to the severe weather conditions around. :-k

Yeah i didnt expect the rain to completly ease off even the wind is only fresh and gusty, the Peninnsula really is sheltering not only Christchurch but right inland and in line with the penninsula as the band swings inland.
Had a few brief heavy bursts here with sleet drops inetrmixed around 2pm.
Looks like that will change soon once the warm front moves closer the flow wil turn more SE than southerly and heavy rain could well be on the cards for tonight.
I get the feeling we are in for a nasty winter ahead.

Its about time people started reading the forcasts properly, the M/S weather warning clearly states "HEAVY RAIN WARNING EASTERN RANGES OF CANTERBURY NORTH OF RANGITATA RIVER, KAIKOURA COAST AND RANGES" as far as i know chch is not anywere near the ranges.
The city forcast says "Periods of rain. Southwesterlies, strong at times" and that is what chch had today so whats wrong #-o

TVNZ's weather person tonight at 18:30 pointed out the high in Hokitika of 17 today, was due to the "fern" effect. Must be all that lush greenery over there! <groan......>

It doesnt seem like anyone is getting consistent hevay rain according to radars. 7pm shows only light shower activity for the majority of Canterbury and Kaikoura and looks like it is all disappearing

I thought the peninsula gives more shelter to Chch during a southeasterly.

I would say when it turns more southerly as oppose to WSW. Anyways it seems Rolleston is getting good rain this hour with intensity between 7 and 10mm/h for past half hour. That surprises me as their doesnt seem to be much on radar over that area.

Today seems to be a fizzer for most with nothing heavy anywhere on the radar. Most of today has seen the front moving from an easterly direction moving from Coastal to Inland areas. Light drizzle falling outside at present. Up to 13mm today. This system has been consistent day in day out with Wednesday =15mm Thursday =14mm Friday = 10mm and Today = 13mm. 52mm for this system so far and a total for May so far of 172mm. The highest recorded at Jeffs since his records starting ten years ago for May.
