Heavy sleet and hail out near Akaroa as I write. Snow level was at about 500m, but most probably lowering now.

Re: Cold Surge To End May [South Island]
the telling that it was not going to be anything out of the ordinary for low lying areas was that Campbell island was not unusualy cold when the cold air arrived there (see that discussion yesterday afternoon)

Few big flakes out of no where just falling now. Very isolated but it is purely flakes. Coming through in one of those isolated pockets.

Re: Cold Surge To End May [South Island]
i see phil has been on here recently. Weather watch says reports are coming in from Canterbury that it is a "fizzer" haha. That high out to the west of NZ was always to intense at 1040+. There was potential for another one on Thursday and Late next weekend but the high's are pushing them further east too.

Re: Cold Surge To End May [South Island]
Has been steadily snowing for some time now - large flakes, and at other times nearly horizontal blizzard like conditions. Hubby still waiting for a break in weather to go and feed out to calves. Up to 5 cm now settled and showing no sign of stopping. Might put some gear on and go out and take photos for the snow starved folks out there. BTW our elevation is 257 asl according to Central Plains Water who want to put a large headrace across our land.

Re: Cold Surge To End May [South Island]
Radar backs this up too. As i said there is a chain of showers inland that are rather stationery and all the activity is further inland. Dont feel to disappointed from this system, there is another chance fri onwards. But we wont go there yet.MoorfNZ wrote:We're just up the road from you Kimkliff Same conditions here - snow falls getting heavier imho.

Re: Cold Surge To End May [South Island]
You have to wonder though why do blue skies say snow to sea level by midday, maybe they could be more on the button if the snow reports are just coming in now.
There's a trough to the south yet maybe that might fire some showers up, either way i think chasing the snow is the best option along with every other man and his dog.
Let there be hope

Re: Cold Surge To End May [South Island]
Chase a bit further inland, coastal areas wont get you a thing, not anytime soon anyways. Its the Darfields, Kimberleys etc , maybe oxford with 1.5 degrees there too. I was planning to but im going to hold fire for nowJasestrm wrote:You have to wonder though why do blue skies say snow to sea level by midday, maybe they could be more on the button if the snow reports are just coming in now.
