Snow showers in Tawa, north of Wgton at 14:15 but not settling at my place.
Tawa Weather now hovering around 3.5 degrees.

Binocculars now show a dusting of white along the upper slopes of western hills between Tawa and Porirua, including Colonial Knob (468 metres asl.) \:D/

We just moved to Wellington on Friday from Dunedin. Just drove back from looking at open homes in Porirua and we had hail and some snow on the motorway. Back in Johnsonville now and its hailing again. It feels like home, well Dunedin home.

I drove to Upper Hutt at 11.45 this morning, dads birthday, as I drove around the Pautahanui inlet it was snowing, I guess thats snow to sea level in Wellingtons northern suburbs.
Back at home now, we are still getting regular hail showers between sunny skies, no flakes at this stage, hail is settling on the lawn for a while with each dump now.

I wouldnt be surprised to hear if it has briefly snowed up the top of Te Aroha at times this afternoon. From here at times it looks like its getting precipitation but not your everyday rain. Could be hail i suppose. But jeez that wind has some bite to it.

that sure was a cold change here this afternoon
I was in waiuku
amazing to see the difference between waiuku at sea level and back home at 380 feet (1.5C difference)
the cloud sheet that came up from the south sure looked like snow clouds!
DP dipped to -0.1 here just now...thats a low DP for these parts!

An interesting temperature drop for these parts, went from 12C to 6C in a couple of hours with some showers and a gusty southerly, clear now.

Had a good hail shower mid afternoon, lawn and hills were white. Brief snow shower about an hour later. Now its sleety rain with the odd snow shower trying to settle on top of the car. Temp is hovering between 3 - 4.c.

Ive never known weather like this either in Hawkes Bay, I too was up Te Mata and snow showers were comming thru, andjust prior to 6pm I walked 100m down Porter Drive ( central Havelock north) and got ice over me. Currently there is an icey shower passing over. I cant wait for the skys to clear as the Bay is going to look amazing!!

Yes there was snow on the summit of Mt te Aroha this afternoon. I hiked up at lunchtime and there were good flurries between 230pm and 300pm today though nothing settled. Some good sized flakes though. Also light snow as we descended to about 850m asl falling through the trees.

Have some pictures but can't get them off a borrowed camera for some reason, so will have to get the owner to deal to it tomorrow and upload.

I just noticed my WX Station PC (running Weather Display) showing SNOW, and had a quick look outside - sure enough, light snow falling again here. The last lot of hail from 430-5pm is still frozen on our front garden and decks. Temp is 1.7C, DP -0.9C, and a light SW making apparent temp 0.1C.

My trip was from Tauranga down to the summit of the Desert Road arriving at mid-day.

Then looped around through Ohakune, up Mountain Road towards Turoa Skifield, across to Whakapapa Village, down and across to Rangipo. Back up Desert Road. Through to Taihape. Back to Desert Road Summit.

Left the summit at about 5.45pm.

We certainly had some passing brief snow showers and evidence of snow was all over the place, even near Taihape.

We never cleared the snow until after Turangi heading back to Taupo.

The wind was surprisingly strong. Wind chill terrible.

The only thing missing was the moisture! lots of blue sky, lots of wind, lots of darn cold air. Just little moisture.

Will probably post a pic or two tomorrow.

As far as I'm concerned it wasn't a bust. Lots of snow flurries, just not for long. The southerly event was as good as I expected as far as cold air goes. Sadly the moisture I expected to present as snow wasn't there.

The central plateau was always going to dry out the air significantly though. Really difficult to get showers even into Taupo when you have what is essentially dry, descending air.

looking forward to warmer weather now!
still only 5.1C here and wind all night

coldest may here in a long time, and wettest since 2001, for here

will get sunshine at least today
will we get to double digits for max temperature though?
will be some big frosts inland if the wind eases 2 nite (but the warm front moving north means the last of the door opening to antartica!)
