I think the central North Island is better for snow chasing when the action is coming in from the Tasman Sea.
You want to see a large cold pool loaded with significant cb's moving in from the west, but you need snow chains and a shovel in the boot!

Cold this morning with 4C but atleast a fine day on the way.

Yes, I picked him up on the way. I didn't think to grab my laptop from work en-route.

Yes I had the chains and a shovel. Shame we didn't need them.

When we left in places, there was a thin layer of snow on the road and flurries landing.

One of the works guys did stop and warn us not to stick around.

Only lost traction very briefly twice. One an unexpected rear wheel lock up under braking before a corner on black Ice. Another when trying to trim speed quickly, observed trouble ahead of us. Neither of concern of crashing.

It was cold enough for a lot of Ice, but they were spraying some kind of liquid (water based with a solvent or antifreeze agent?) and had dumped grit, so no trouble.

Couple of interesting comments from this morn's Dominion Post ...
'Alpine blasts go downtown'

An antarctic blast of snow, hail and sleet ushered in the first day of winter, bringing snow to sea levels and the first flurries in downtown Wellington for 14 years...

MetService forecaster Chris Noble said it was rare to have snow to such low levels in May a day before the official start of winter.

Forecaster Oliver Druce said it was also unusual for snow to fall in Wellington's CBD - flurries were last recorded there in 1995 and snow last settled in the inner city in 1976.

My trip was from Tauranga down to the summit of the Desert Road arriving at mid-day
Agree with NZstorm that you snow chase down there on a Westerly, I did consider a drive down there yesterday morning but the incoming cloud tops all looked a bit weak on the sat pic.

I was in Broadmeadows for the overnight snowfall in July 1995. The streets were treacherously icy the following morning. A positive payoff was that while conditions remained pretty cool, the next 14 days (18th-31st) produced 97.7 hrs of sun with the SW sheltering giving clear skies.

Doing a report from sunny Hukerenui outside it's 8.6°C with a cold WSW wind - horizon to horizon clear blue skies, great day.

Is this SSW wind supposed to die out tonight?
It's quite gusty at the moment and I can't see a frost here tonight unless it eases off dramatically.

Hi Borris. Yes, I don't think the snow to low levels in Hawke's Bay and flurry in Napier got much of a mention here. A few excerts from yesterday's Hawke's Bay Today...
'Winter hits early with heavy snow'
01.06.2009

Snowfalls through parts of Hawke's Bay have marked an early start to winter.

Reports of snow came yesterday from as far as Wairoa through to Dannevirke, and as low as Te Mata Peak, in a cold snap that caught some residents by surprise...

There was also snow reports from Wairoa, Elsthorpe, Kai waka and the Triple Peaks in Havelock North...

There was also a light flurry of snow reported in central Napier about 8.30pm and 10pm last night [Sun]...
