Re: Cold Surge to End May [North Island]
700mb (3000m) temps for NZ for 3pm Sunday. I quite like the 700mb charts for these wintry events. The minus 15C line sort of represents the area of possible instability. The whole system sharpens up a bit over the North Island in the afternoon. I would say the Hawkes Bay/Gisborne hills/ranges will bear the brunt of this snowfall. Will be interesting to see if snow can make it through to Taupo (elevation 400m) which is in a sheltered area.

Re: Cold Surge to End May [North Island]
i see whakatane has had 15mm and 10 mm respectively in the past 2 hours. 25mm in last 2 hours. Is there some thunderstorm activity around there? Or just very stead persistent heavy rain?

Nothing heard or seen from here. Not much to report really, some reasonably heavy showers passed through, but were only short lived. Still above 10° C outside.

Yes, a lovely morning in Auckland.
Not much on the Sat pic at the moment but the Cb cloud SE of HawkesBay/Gisborne will continue to develop as it moves north.

Re: Cold Surge to End May [North Island]
I love the Met Service convection forecast for the east of the North Island today, Thunderstorms/Snow!
Re: Cold Surge to End May [North Island]
Good morning all.
I'm a newbie but love weather, very bad preferably its more interesting.
Well the Southerly hit here just before 6am this morning with heavy rain and a rising wind for a while.
At the moment we seem to be getting squalls coming through Whitby every 30 mins or so with heavy rain and a gusty Southerly.
I live on top of a hill here, not sure of elevation though, perhaps 100 metres above sea level.
Our last squall came through at 9.45am and it started with small hail and progressed to a good sized snow flake - about 1cm I'd say, looked like a blizzard as the wind blew it around, none has settled as the ground is wet and the squall lasted about 10 mins. I haven't seen snow up here since 1995.
Anyway as I said I love the weather, I'm not technical but I have lived in Wellington long anough to know whats coming and going.
Cheers.

Your not alone I'm a newbie to and love learning about weather, I understand - I too am not very good with using correct weather terminology, but, I am learning and I think I sound quite impressive when I use weather words & terminology around my family and friends ie; sferics, convection, CAPE, DP's &c... awesome - OT (off topic) I know, but, welcome to NZWF - look forward to reading more of your weather report's from your area/region. take care.

Re: Cold Surge to End May [North Island]
Temperature at Tawa, north of Wgton, hovering around 4-5 degrees for last few hours.
We had hail on and off for about 10 minutes from 10:40 and it lay about on the lawn until after 11.
We are now enjoying brief sunny spells.
It's on again, off again sort of weather....
No doubt there's more in store.

got some high cloud moving over now after a very nice morning. Not sure if its cloud from the southerly or the stuff moving in from the west.

Re: Cold Surge to End May [North Island]
Wind has picked up slightly from the south, it's been a relatively warm, sunny day in this part of the country, big chunky clouds coming in from the west, temp has dropped it's cooler.

Re: Cold Surge to End May [North Island]
Hail showers continuing at intervals in Tawa, mostly small stuff.
Near pea-sized hail in a good fall at 13:30.
Temperature still lurking about 5 to 6 degrees.
In between we get welcome, but brief, sunny spells.
One report of snow showers on Tawa Flat around 11:15 this morning.

Re: Cold Surge to End May [North Island]
Im going to have to break out the instruction manual for the weather consol shortly. The beeping is driving me mad while im doing work. Alarm is set for 60km/h and its going off every couple of seconds at the moment. largest gust so far has been 68.5km/h. That wind is bitterly cold too.
