Highest anticyclone central pressure?

Unread post by barrybob »

Hi. Forgive the lack of correct terminology, I am not a 'weather nut'

That high currently in the Tasman was 1042 this morning. I have never it that high before and it got me wondering, "What is / was the highest recorded anticyclone central pressure in NZ?"

A google search didnt really help (maybe I was using the wrong keywords)

Thanx for your time.

Thats not an easy question to answer since I'm not sure that any records are kept of central pressures, so an answer would come down to experience - I think I have seen high 1040s in the past, but I couldnt remember when or be sure... :)

Hi barrybob  Nice to have a Coaster on the forum.

Not sure if it's a direct quote from MetService's Erick Brenstrum, but the NZ Herald suggests that...
...the highest pressure over land recorded in New Zealand was 1046hp, in the late 1800s.

Over land possibly.. back in the late 80's I have seen hPa's of 1047-8 in the tasman.. will try and track down some synops to back it up.

Referring to my book here, Highest Ever Air Pressure was 1083.5 hpa on the 31st of December, 1968, Located at Agata, Siberia, Russia.
To Back it up look at page 58 on " A Guide to Weather" by William J. Burroughs, Bob Crowder, Ted Robertson, Eleanor Valler-Talbot, Richard Whitaker.
However thats not in NZ, I would look at Niwa for that.

I have my highest pressure marked on my barometer but I don't know what date it was. Will have to go through my weather records.
It was 1044hPa.

I think MetService had a high just last year on Sep 1, to NE of the Chathams, on 1048 hPa at one stage (not sure if it exceeded that). The same high apparently set a new record of 1044 hPa for the South Island and Chatham Islands, according to Weatherwatch citing NIWA, and was "just shy of the national record of 1045.9 set in Wellington in 1889".
