Right about... now.
Suns out, heavy rainfall overnight has cleared and the low cloud streaming in hugging the bombays enough to put them out of sight from home.. you can almost reach up and pull the base down further.

More on the Dunedin gales- I really would have though a gale uprooting trees and damaging buildings in a main centre might have warrented warning status? Unless of course it was worse than predicted.

is it also that the NE wind funnels down the harbour and right into the city?

Have to say that's one of the better weather stories I've read -

Re: Tasman Sea trough 2nd week June
I've never seen wind warnings issued for gusts below 120km/h. By all accounts, the highest gust was 109km/h and that was on swampy summit, which is pretty high and where no one lives.Razor wrote:http://www.odt.co.nz/news/dunedin/60505 ... r039easterMyself wrote:None of those wind gusts are strong enough for warnings, and I don't think they issue warnings if it's only for a small area.

If we want criteria for wind warnings changed, I suppose we would have to tell the government.
Re: Tasman Sea trough 2nd week June
If it's sea fog that may not always be the case. You might also have the surface inversion forming and cutting off the strong winds from below, hence it would be calm and foggy and low levels.Jasestrm wrote: The MS forecast early morning fog for Thurs/Fri this week for Christchurch, but they also say strong NE winds and easing on Friday.
Doesnt make sense to me as you wont see Fog if there is strong winds blowing, as it will just break it all up.
When I see fog forecast (not that is happens often in Wellington) I don't question it too much, nor complain if it's wrong, simply because fog must be the hardest thing to forecast accurately. I don't think anyone ever can or ever will get it right everytime.

Further to what Myself said, the article also states that...Razor wrote: http://www.odt.co.nz/news/dunedin/60505 ... r039easter

...and wind in Dunedin city gusted up to 67km. The winds were not particularly strong, but were coming from an unusual direction, so caused more damage than winds of that speed might otherwise do, a MetService forecaster said.

Re: Tasman Sea trough 2nd week June
I have to agree with....Myself...(wierd typing that!) I lived in Monterey, California, about a 2 hour drive south of San Fransisco and we would quite often get good wind with the sea fog that would retreat in the morning and move in at night...around those parts they are, actually, pretty good about forecasting it and it was always pretty impressive when it moved in! most likely because it is something that happens ALL THE TIMEMyself wrote:If it's sea fog that may not always be the case. Re: Tasman Sea trough 2nd week June
Me neither, but since current obs, etc already exist in this thread and the Tasman Sea trough's associated fronts, etc are what's affecting our current weather patterns, may as well keep it all together for now I guess.Manukau heads observer wrote:(not sure which thread I should be posting in for current weather?)
Have to admit that having a general thread seems to have proven somewhat confusing when coinciding with significant events in previous months.

Re: Tasman Sea trough 2nd week June
Awesome line of CB's over the coromandel late this evening, I do have some photos but do not do any justice to the view from here.. to top it all off, aside from the sunlit back-ends was the overshoot on 1 particular.. right down the southern end with the remainder buliding along the left flank.. (depending on which way you were viewing them.)
A bit of pileus assosciated & a whopping great jet right up there at the exhaust.
Jetstream, not plane.
Big shame they were over there & not another 50km inland... would have been a wild ride for anyone underneath.

Re: Tasman Sea trough 2nd week June
The powers that be at the metservice might want to add fog to the overnight forecast..
Absolute pea souper here with visibility barely 30 metres. The other farmhouse across the road is completely obscured from view & that is a first.

Pretty good visibility here. No fog here since last winter, surprisingly didn't have any all autumn this year.

I've just driven back to Auckland from Hamilton, fog pretty much all the way and especially thick around Pokeno.

Re: Tasman Sea trough 2nd week June
Some low cloud or fog reported around Chch sometime today and this evening, but nothing in central city. However, air must be pretty moist - no precipitation, but surfaces are damp this evening. (and nowhere near a frost)
