Check out the two Opoho web cams....the issue is snow on top of black ice which is causing all the mayhem plus a hilly city.

yeah, looks whiter now that day as broken. And I know from living in Dunedin that as you head up Stuart Street the snow quickly thickens up.

Well I'll be, Jimmy...Jase, you were right! Check out the Latest Tasman Sea map Issued at: 7:51 am 16 Jun 2009 NZST from the M/S...looks as though a wee upper level low DID form off the coast! Well done...good call! =D> =D> It looks like the second trough moving up the coast will affect us more than anything..we'll see...

Yes Glitz I got the feeling Jase was right as it was developing- it certainly came in against most predictions here just around midnight. The warming that preceeded it negated any snowfall other than accross the higher parts of BP and the Port Hills though.

I'm not sure we'll see much more action in ChCh today, although there is always the "chain shower" (I hate that naming convention!) possibility- but again I think its a bit too warm for lowest level snow.

In the meantime a little bit of warmth from the sun but not much as its nearly the soulstice.
Guess what MS is overloading again >_< .

A light dusting of snow in Invercargill this morning, with a lot of black ice, the roads are certainly very slick.

Getting very cold outside, things have really started to freeze since 8am, and more light snow we get this morning won't be melting straight away, with more cloud rolling in off the sea.

Great to see snow on the Otago webcams. When did snow last fall so low in Dunedin, a couple of years back ? memory has gone
I see Wanaka got a dusting.
Sat pics suggests a crop of heavier wintry showers should reach Dunedin about mid morning, some clearing on the West Coast so you would think the showers would get into Chch, radar has them on track for BP atleast.

Looks like a pretty good dusting to the Canty foothills off to the W and NW from my "perch on high" (ten stories up in CBD)...

Last time i saw snow down the bay...was 2004.
That was a far more significant fall than this one.
Well watch with anticipation for the next wave of wintry showers.

As these often do. Snow in the village at Mt Cook though, I am told. And webcams suggest that Queenstown and Wanaka have recieved modest snowfalls to lake level.

Had close to an inch of snow in Opoho this morning - probably more further up the hill for Phil. The few cars that have driven down to town have created a nice compact layer of ice.

Not a large volume of snow, but down to low levels for Dunedin!

That second crop of snow showers arrived in the last half hour, heavy at times and large flakes. Really coming down hard now. Traffic seems to be moving easier though, perhaps temps have increased a little.
