There's been a few days in between where they stretched to a balmy 5/6C though haven't there?

I only have the daily records for Alex. on hand up to 1982, but the 7 consecutive "ice days" event from 3/7/1958 to 9/7/1958 (highest reading -0.7) is unlikely to have been bettered there. It was the coldest month on record at Alex, with a mean of -0.5C.

Oamarama (Tara Hills) in July 1968 had a monthly mean of -4.9C but unfortunately the NIWA records don't include the daily readings for 1968. Unlike tha Alex. 1958 situation where freezing fogs limited sun to 72 hrs, Omarama had quite a sunny month and although the average high was only about 0.8C it's not likely there were long runs of ice days. Haven't looked up any dailies for Ophir, Twizel or Manorburn dam.

May be able to improve on this - Tekapo had 8 such days in a row in July 1992. Will check some of those other places mentioned.

Also Ophir, 8 days from 1/7/1982. Ophir is about 1.4C cooler than Alexandra, being at a higher altitude, but the difference in average maxima is only about 0.7C. It is not as fogprone as the Alex. basin.

Edit: can't find anything better for low-altitudes. For minima, Moa Creek in Central Otago had 60 consecutive nights with 0C or less, 1959/06/16 to 1959/08/14.

No grit trucks up my way this morning. Drove down 300m and sat outside about Gerald's house, calculating the relative speed at which I could potentially smash into the two stranded buses facing up the hill and the numerous parked cars on the other side.

Waited until three other vehicles went down (one being my neighbour WITH chains on) to see how they feared, all crawled/slid by so I followed, and made it. I heard later in the morning 3 of my unfortunate Opoho neighbours had a wee pile up. It never got below 0.2ºC here but it was under 1ºC all night.

Can't wait to see what tomorrow morning will bring

4.4 degrees in my bedroom this morning.

Not incredibly cold in Dunedin minimum of 0.3 at uni, although that is on top of a building so likely to read high. The humidity is what counts in making for a nice looking frost.

I was staying at a house off Frankton Road in Queenstown a couple of weeks back, didn't get above -0.5 for 5 straight days.

Wow, don't you have a heater? It mustn't be healthy is all I can say!

Only a little frost here as some clouds meant the low only got to 1.0°C.

Perhaps we'd use heaters more if power was more affordable.

A good frost here this morning in West Melton. Went down to minus 4.2C in the screen. Don't know what the grass temperature was, would be about 7C probably. We had no water as the pipes were frozen :>
