Down to minus 0.5C here, coldest for a while.
At last, getting clear skies without the drizzly rubbish which has plagued the weather here, with the current anticyclone and the system out to the east of us.
Even though the surface barometer maximised itself out at 1038hPas, you wouldn't call it 'anticyclonic gloom' as that weather usually is associated with the actual anticyclone being overhead.

Thats October and November, atleast the weather is brighter and warmer then, nothing worse in NZ than the cold Southerly on the east coast, unless it brings snow of coursemight be good timing for a run of southwesterlies

Invercargill is 7-8c max in winter (we're 11 or 12) though and in anticyclonic conditions -1 or 2 air temps.Hamilton though is more like inland Otago or Christchurch.

Long term June average for Invercargill is min 1.5C to max 9.7, Auckland min 8C to max 15.2C.

It seems to be that way eh.
Set for another nice frost tonight again for about the 8th or 9th night in a row.

Re: Report your Frost, or (how low did you go 2009)
An article in the paper tonight about how cold its been.
full article here http://www.stuff.co.nz/waikato-times/ne ... chill-pics
Last night it only got to -3.7 after being very cold very early.
So far this month my average temp has been a chilly 6.4. I gather the Hamilton temp in this article are from the Ruakura station which is in a paddock right on the boundary of Hamilton.
Currently only 0.7 out there at the moment bring on this low i say!
EDIT: this cold fascinates me so much. Shortly after my original post it plummeted and now its -0.2 shortly after 7.30.
Hamilton is inching toward its coldest-ever June since records began more than 60 years ago....Niwa climate scientist Dr Andrew Tait said Hamilton's mean temperature so far for June has been 7.1C, just 0.1C above the lowest recorded June mean in 1972.

If you were to say compare Mangere with Musselburgh (as NIWA do), then it's about half and half. However, Mangere's average T-min so far this month is about 5.1°C, whereas Musselburgh's is about 4.0°C.Razor wrote:Hasn't Auckland been colder than Dunedin most nights this month?

Re: Report your Frost, or (how low did you go 2009)
I believe the long term average June min for Mussel is about 3.5C and for Mangere its 7.8C.
A milder spell for the last days of the month should bump Aucklands means up a bit but we are still looking at the 4th consecutive month of below average temps. Can we make it a 5th in July. I can't see this cold spell (below average) lasting too much longer but you never know.

Also bear in mind that average minima at Musselburgh are higher than for much of the rest of Dunedin.

Still managed a slight frost in Pukke this morning.. nothing like the last few big ones but crunchy underfoot nonetheless.

Foggy and frosty here,
This fog is refusing to lift at all, and it is quite dense.

-3.4 last night and thick fog that lingered all day apparently (im back in auckland). That made the max temp for today only 8.2 at 3.43pm but at 1pm it was a only a bone chilling 4 degrees.

Re: Report your Frost, or (how low did you go 2009)
It certainly wasn't as cold this morning as the few previous mornings here in the greater BOP but the frost was certainly heavier - unsure whether due to a heavier dew overnight or just a build up of previous frosts - one thing for sure, it wasn't pleasant feeling the back of the truck getting pushed sideways by the trailer whilst coming down the Kawerau side of the Rotoma Bluffs.....

Re: Report your Frost, or (how low did you go 2009)
Unofficially it was again -4C this morning up here on the lower slopes of Mt Pirongia this morning.
Extremely heavy frost with total whiteout thanks to a blanket of fog, which reduced visibility looking east to about 125 meters at 7:30 am this morning.
I've heard a lot of comments about how many sub-zero days & frosts we have had so far this year.
For those of you that were living in the Ngahinapouri, Te Rore area in the mid 1960's, frost of this severity or worse coupled with foggy days were very much the norm right throughout winter.
One of the winter stock feeds we used to grow was Suedes (think Turnips). We would be up while it was still dark before school and literally had to pic- axe the bulbs out of the ground. It wasnt unusual to find the ground frozen to a depth of 150mm on areally cold day.
The tank stand that used to hold the house water was made from corrugated iron. It held about 500 gallans of water whhich would regularly freeze over as would the water pipes.
Through the 70's and following decades there has been a gradual mildness to the winters. This year is a really good reminder of how severe winter can be here in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions.
I have been able to convey to my kids what a really cold Waikato winter was like. All I can say is "Rock On Frosty Boy" there will a hell of a lot less flys and bugs this coming summer
I'll post so piccies a little later when the wife brings my camera back.

Re: Report your Frost, or (how low did you go 2009)
I don't think winters up there can be "severe". Yes, the nights can be extremely cold, but the days are pretty much always mild. I'd be surprised if the Waikato has ever recorded an ice day.Dustmite wrote: Through the 70's and following decades there has been a gradual mildness to the winters. For 1940-1996 at Ruakura, days with complete paired obs. only, lowest max was 4.0C.
Re: Report your Frost, or (how low did you go 2009)
A goldmine as ever RWood.
A place does not have "severe" winters if the coldest ever winter day still reached +4C.

Re: Report your Frost, or (how low did you go 2009)
Like Dustmite, I recall the winters of the late 60's, early 70's being much more severe than what we get now. I lived in Hinuera then (just south of Matamata) and I recall coming home from school and breaking ice in the puddles on the south side of the garage. Also recall the frozen waterpipes etc...
