Very big solid ground strikes in Paerata atm, woke me up, rattling all the missus ornaments and im watching them land in the paddocks out towards Bombay.

Sounds like a very humid contrast in air compared to Christchurch as usual with cold wintry air, would love to see some photo's if possible :-) .
There was a few lighter showers around 6pm here but nothing since, the rain band is sitting over the top of the South Island now.
Breaking news non weather related i know, shooting in Burnside Christchurch houses evacuated one person injured  here we go again.

Thanks Razor.... hope to see some great pics from this. Safest bet is to look North. The number of flashes have slowed down herfe but they are all brilliant white and purple....can usually see the bolts.

Will have a 5:30am press release tomorrow... ugh!

pretty sure i saw a big CG hit somewhere in the CBD, turned all the lights off abruptly. another one a little later brought them all back!? perhaps it was the visibility playing tricks on me.

just saw another CG out my window!

According to the gfs run just out in the last hour the north island will see heavy rain for the next 3 or 4 days in areas. Gisborne and Hawkes Bay will heavy rain even falling into Thursday and later in the week a complx low from the southern tasman looks set with consistent runs to bring further heavier rain later. I think the north island at the end of this week will be waterlogged!

dan, they are moving towards hamilton, but youll need to look east probably - they have some eastwards momentum now. also seem to be losing strength - that said, just saw another flash!

FYI aucklanders, the kelly tarltons carpark is a primo spot for watching storms!

An awesome thunderstorm alright! Heard the first rumbles after 10.40pm and there was occasional thunder and lightning until 12.30am! Between 11.40pm-midnight was the best as there were heaps of lightning bolts and boom after boom of house-rattling thunder :D So I only got 6hrs sleep and I have 2 exams today....bad timing
Lots of heavy rain with it too, 20-25mm. In my opinion best storm I have seen in the east for years :D

Last nights thunderstorms were elevated thus they had no problem being electrically active over land. The very high storm bases make for more spectacular lightning.

Steady rain here this morn.
