re the tornado report, you can see very good directional shear on the NZWP sounding.

Would be interested to see minute by minute observations from Kaitaia Hospital AWS, where it hit!

Re: Unstable period, Early July (North Island)
Interesting report from Kaitaia, when and where was the Funnel cloud photo in that news story taken?
Some very heavy showers here currently, most of the Thunderstorm activity is now out to the east of Auckland after crossing Northland,

Re: Unstable period, Early July (North Island)
I posted and was on earlier to do a brief update and then had to log off (to keep phone line clear) however, in rmy rush I may have after preview mode instead of submitting I logged out.
I have tried to make contact via landline and mobile with a friend who's home is on Pukepoto Road however I have not heard back from him as yet.
I have spoken to a few people who heard reports about the tornado and damage in Kaitaia, however, I am reluctant to speculate on until I recieve and/or hear solid facts, I will post once I hear and/or recieve any updates, till then I can only wait to hear news from him.

Re: Unstable period, Early July (North Island)
Is that picture actually the tornado that did the damage? there doesn't seem to be any mention that it is the one.Vertigo wrote:paul, here it is...

Re: Unstable period, Early July (North Island)
Thanks for finding that, didn't want Paul to get the wrong idea about it. Although with no mention of the photo or a witness account which you would have thought TVNZ would have got from the photorapher, i doubted it.Manukau heads observer wrote:I seem to recall seeing that same photo recently somewhere else?

Great memory Brian! Thanks for checking that out.
Yes, it always pays to be a little suspicious of such pictures until we get some sort of comfirmation.

Re: Unstable period, Early July (North Island)
the lightning active CB's have moved offshore though , to the NE and E of the upper NI
but there could be some isolated ones to come in 2 nite...but the best action has passed now

Once again a TV One reporter uses the term 'mini tornado' on more than one occasion.

Re: Unstable period, Early July (North Island)
having seen the news footage: tiles blown off and fences blown down, small trees blown over, windows blown out
I would say about 85 to 90 knot winds?, F0 rating>?

i heard to matty, they were doing fine until a reporter said the mini tornado word.. unfortunately.
What was Tonys thoughts on the " mini tornado" word again? something like it comes out of a mini new reporter and a mini news script??

No thunder heard in Tauranga. Some very distant flashes out East, but nothing to write home about. Sorry.

Yeah, but was it from the actual mini-tornado?
