Lightning in NZ
The right terminology lends a hint as to the nature of the different forms.

Many thanks DT-NZ for your efforts with the photos.

I am no expert on diagnosing tornado strength from damage but earlier comments about F0 to maybe F1 seem to be about right??

Looks like today's event has passed by with no grief (or none that we've heard about yet). The whole thing was not nearly as active as yesterday's event. We've had about 600 lightning strikes last 12 hours whereas there were several thousand yesterday. Also the indiviual cells strengths on the radar were less today.

Cheers,

Paul

Some lightning strikes near our West Coast over the past hour from shower activity that is moving onto Auckland now.

Yes it was. There is a narrow but rather intense line of showers wnw to ese extending onshore into the Auckland area - part of a hook on the bottom end of the frontal band that moved across Northland this evening. Looks like some small hail in it too.

That rain area gave 12mm here after 11pm last night, heavy at times, with 6mm in an hour. Ground is very wet now.

The AWS on the roof of Kaitaia Hospital is a MetService one. The maximun recorded wind gust from that AWS was 47 knots between midday and 1pm on Saturday.

I wonder if those readings aren't taken roughly on the hour, rather than the peak gust during that hour?

Niwa's Kaitaia Ews site, which is just less than 2km S of Kaitaia Hospital, shows NW gusts increased to 22 knots at 12pm, 23 knots at 1pm and then 42 knots at 2pm, before dropping back down again. Similarly, Kaitaia Aero, which about 6km N of Kaitaia Hospital, shows gusts to 22 knots at 12pm, 26 knots at 1pm, but only 30 knots at 2pm.

Just got a good wee shower here after what started off as a pleasant morn.

The peak wind gust from the Kaitaia Hospital AWS is the maximum wind gust recorded throughout the whole hour.

Is that a stevenson screen there too on top of Kaitaia hospital? (I'd be thinking it'd be giving less than desirable observations...)
