A few rumbles heard here, but the thunderstorm has passed well to the north of here.

Yes, great shot Graeme!

Wow, lightning tracker looks impressive now!

Thought I also heard thunder about an hour ago (12:50pm), but not much on the lightning tracker then? The 1pm radar looks interesting though... could that have been a hook just NE of Rakino Is?

EDIT: Included a portion of the 1pm radar image.

Yes that is a great Cb shot by Graeme.
Here is a photo of the Cb clouds (thunderstorm) moving away to the NE. Storm moved from West Coast across the lower Northshore out into the Waitemata.

Some very interesting personal accounts of the Kaitaia tornado in this story from The Northern Advocate...

The maximun recorded wind gust from that AWS was 47 knots between midday and 1pm on Saturday.
Interesting report. 47kt gusts do not damage buildings so this would not be fully representative of the vortex strength. I think it would take a gust in excess of 70kts to do the damage in the pic below. We don't often see roof damage like this in New Zealand. The EF1 scale is in the 75kt+ range.

Just posting this pic again for reference.

That Northern Advocate article was a very informative and dramatic account of what happened. Tend to agree with NZstorm's comments.

We are lucky no one was injured or killed.

Yes, further to what Brian said, most of the reported damage to the hospital occurred at the boiler house, administration block and A&E dept. Given that they all suffered roof damage, I'd assume they're much further away from the main block, which has the anemometer mounted at one end and a wind-sock at the other. I doubt whether either instrument would have survived a direct hit.
