I see Phillip Duncan is reporting gusts now to 130kmh in exposed places in the outer hauraki gulf on his weather watch web site :)
should see wind speed increase further south in the next few hours I would say

No virga here, non stop rain and looks like the heaviest precip comes through tonight.
GFS still indicates some wind potential early tomorrow for Auckland.

Nev

Thank you, and appreciate the report - the winds really have only started to pickup here within the last hour or so - there have been some strong gusts come thru - I'll post this message now - and hopefully will do an update tomorrow providing there are no power-cuts - please keep safe, take care.

Still only blowing 35kmph here, but some pretty big gusts keep snuffing the fire and blowing smoke into the lounge. Nice. #-o

Winds are getting vicious up here on the hill with the Bombays funneling everything like a wind tunnel.. even to stand out the back facing towards Bombay you need to hang onto the railing, im over 6 foot & not exactly a lightweight but this is blowing me round quite a bit. Only issue with the fireplace is the winds channeling under the house, saves me having to clean the ashes out as I think they have all gone through the top!

Welcome aboard too Cat :)

the low has been tracking more ESE to E than SE, and is moving a bit faster now, but looks like it will cartwheel more SE over the next few hours, which should increase the winds more, especialy as the frontal system is approaching the far north and getting more organised
(just my thoughts!)

Yes, average mean-winds increasing a little. From the outer-Gulf to Cape Reinga they're at least 90 km/h atm, and funnelling points around either end of Gt Barrier Is. are around 110 km/h. Winds were down a little earlier on the Waitemata, but Near-gale around Whangaparoa Peninsular.

Hi DT, yes I'd imagine Doubtless Bay is a little more sheltered than the Cape. ;)

for those exposed now casting stations, its nothing unusual yet
unless the low tracks more SE, we might miss the worst of it
wind is increasing slowly here ATM, and raining steadily
cold considering its a low from the north (but we are in cold sector)

Thanks Dale

Here comes the rain, might be an isolated downpour, but shes pretty heavy at the moment. I've given up on the fire, it's dying a slow death. Barometer is reading 1007hPa and wind speed has picked up to 40kmph but the gusts are quite impressive, the "high wind zone" doors are flexing disturbingly, still got power though.

Be interesting to take a drive in the morning and see if theres any damage, our road runs along a ridge line in slip prone farm land, so theres usually something falling off.

ooo power surge.

Air pressure 1007 in Auckland, 990 at Cape Reinga - quite a remarkable difference.

Still tracking east....been going east for 3 hours. Good news for those in Auckland...bad news for those who forecast strong winds in Auckland. *cough*

The Low now seems to have a defined clear patch in the center, meaning of some significance.

8:30pm Water-Vapour sat-pic looks kinda interesting - can make out the centre quite plainly.
