Re: General July Weather
About time we had some SW scenarios. Record low 3-week sunshine total here is the "present" of the recent regime.

An end to the long run of cold weather for NZ is in sight.
Mild here this morning 13C, dewpoint 12C. Overcast, radar shows a few light showers around.

Re: General July Weather
On the topic of thunderstorm risk...
Looking like the small subtropical low coming in from the north tonight will bring a thunder risk onto the far north down the east of Northland to Coromandel but Auckland likely to miss out.
gfs Lifted index values for 12Z tonight.

Re: General July Weather
Warmed up to a whopping six degrees here, and the rain has arrived. Don't see it lasting long though.

Today in Wellington must have been the sunniest day for weeks. I think we can all agree, southwesterly flows are simply marvellous.

Re: General July Weather
Sorry Michael, forgot all about Auckland there! You must be getting plenty of sun between the showers though?

Re: General July Weather
Yep there was some sun, strange as it seems because it was such a strong wind the clouds moved quick unlike those days where the anticyclone is closer (ie off the NW tip of northland)but its overcast and still windy.

Re: General July Weather
Especially after the misery of the dullest 3 weeks ever here, as per another thread. I seldom complain about the weather here and unlike many am not bothered by wind, but persistent greyness is too much.Myself wrote:Today in Wellington must have been the sunniest day for weeks. Re: General July Weather
Have to remember its overdue,Wellington has had sunnier winters than what used to be prior 2007 for a few years so it must be an adjustment back to the 1970s.

Yes, a fair enough point. The shock is greater when the contrast is greater. Actually, winter 2007 was quite sunny here despite a high July rainfall, and even winter 2008 with a high overall rainfall had a reasonable amount of sun.

Re: General July Weather
Looks like tomorrow and Wednesday sees some "spring like weather" with a westerly dominating and highs of 16 for both days. 'Very Warm' if we consider that only a handful of days in the last 2 months have got above 10! Beautiful day out there today again. July infact has been very dry for Christchurch so far!

Re: General July Weather
Does sound like it will be warm tomorrow i cant wait! and mild nights.. nice to wake up to in the morning.
I wonder if this next cold out break will bring anything as over the years once we get a warm NW flow and a very cold change it can mean snow?

Re: General July Weather
It looks to me like we are movign into a spell of more vigourous weather for the South Island with an intensification of westerly quarter storms and cold southerly outbreaks between. Could be an interesting couple of weeks.

Re: General July Weather
ECMWF suggests an unstable West/NW flow will develop over the country next week.
Partly cloudy 15C here, light to mod Westerly.
