Short, Showery SE flow July 11-12th!!

Unread post by Storm Struck »

Just thought i would create a topic for the small influence a very cold SE flow will have on the east coast of the South Island, since the other topic is for the sub tropical low over the North Island.
Probly wont be much i know but there is certainly that chance we will see some sleety showers with small hail, and the snow level down to 200m.
If the low decides to slide a little further south things could get interesting, but hey no point sitting on the fence :P .
Again south and north of the city will get the majority of the showers through that SE channel.

I know what is starting to pi*s me off and that is the "Snow to low levels" that the M/S are starting to use all the time :x its a forcast so they should give a snow level! like what is low level snow? 1-2-3 maybe 400m who knows but all i know is that it is of little use for anyone.
I think they dont want to get burnt for getting it wrong oh and it helps there accuracy stats

I'm not confident at this stage Jase. It already looks like the northern system is staying further north and shuffling away from any influence on us down here. It may yet happen but my money is on a fine and cold sunday, at worst a cloudy one with light precispiation briefly

Yes i know it doesnt look overly promising now with the track of the low to the north more northern now, so a simular situation to what happened here with the last low which hit the NI a week or so ago.
Just the odd occasional shower here and there but more inland than anything, but also a few icy ones with small hail.

Yes, usually a light NW day with fine spring fell like day, unfortunately i really dont see any action from this short southerly flick. Maybe the odd icy shower but nothing to write home about. The good news is the Tasmen is lookinf very active as is the very large low out east and later in the week or next weekend anything could happen! There is potential.

Hmm yes, thought I should bring my comments to the correct thread- doesn't sound right on the 'subtropical one", but I can confirm the showers aeem to be intensifying here now and yes- there is sleet in the mix of it already. Hmmmm. #-o

Latest 15 min rain radar picks up quite an intense shower over ChCh/ Port Hills and reasonable coastal shower activity to the immediate south

Coming onto rain now but temperature rising. Still hardly any wind but obviously coming in from the south.

A light dusting on Flagstaff and Mt Cargill, a cold 2ºC, and a mix of blue sky and cloud. As I type a fine/light sun shower has started, wouldn't surprise me if we get a sleet or light hail shower this morning. I think I'll stay under the heatpump for now

Hears hoping we atleast get a sleet shower, we've got the temps for it surely.

Showers? I've been up since 7.30am and was greeted with thick fog, and hard ice on the cars.

Ah whoops was just guessing sorry Fluuterbye, just that it said 0.2 mm in last hour in invers, but must be .2 mm of fog haha.
Heavy shower here but just rain still.

Lol - thats what it will be. It seems to happen when hard frosts thaw too.

Blue sky with the odd cloud around and hardly a breeze but cool nonetheless - I'm wondering where the 'bitter sou'easter' is.

Yep, that must be why quite often when we're getting light sth-east showers up Dunedin i look at the rain radar and wonder why there's always what looks to be light drizzly showers in southland but they never show up over fouveax strait haha. Atleast now i'll know its just frost.
Still just rain here, but i'm only at 100m above sea level so i'm best give up sitting around dreaming haha.
Went up the Rock n Pillar range with 2 friends for a night in the snow last thurs night though, plenty up there this winter, thick hard snow down to around the 800m mark.
Invercargill must be keeping well out of trouble this winter with all these 'northern lows'?

Frequent showers out on Banks Peninsula (mostly drizzly); slight dusting of snow visible above about 600m.

Period of showers overnight (after a brief clearance yesterday afternoon) left a white coating above about 350-400m around Akaroa Harbour. Sun now poking through the clouds. (partial clearance was enough for a frost out here this morning - not much drop in temp needed)
