Re: Strong, Cold Southwest Flow over NZ - 18th-20th July
Looks like the Wellington region is doing well with todays situation. Its been fine all day although cold (10c at the mo in Upper Hutt) Just some hi cloud to the north connected with the passing low to the north. Max today was only 13c here at home. Northerlies in the TAF .. Now that does make a change!

It looks like its started raining/snowing up in the mountains and the radar looks good. Hopefully we'll get some flurries here in Queenstown

00Zgfs indicates it will be cold enough for snow to sea level from Catlins to the Otago Peninsula overnight. Big question will be just how much precip will fall esp in Dunedin, perhaps not a lot. Todays Macquarie Island obs certainly verify the very cold air.

Looks like Invercargill is being battered by some very squally weather with 3 degrees and a 70km/h Sou'wester.

Nothing here . It's been a nice fine sunny day.
Might as well of been 1030hPa instead of a very low barometer.
Foggy here early overnight but clearing away allowing a good frost here this morning. This morning, the fog line started about just east of Weedons.

Thermometer temperature in the screen rising now. Up to 7.5C from 1.8C at 8 o'clock this evening and still rising with a bit of a NW here now
Low barometer so that means anything can happen

Ok so we have 10 in Westmelton (due to NW), 13 in Kaikoura (Westerly and warmest in NZ currently), 8 in Ashburton with a southerly breeze and 1 degree here at the moment with no wind. Very different climates at present Wed/Thurs something to keep a look at. Good to hear snow falling in gore. Hope ya get loads

Queenstown... has rained, still feels not cold enough to snow at this level (sorry no thermometer), but no precip for an hour or so

Re: Strong, Cold Southwest Flow over NZ - 18th-20th July
Don't understand the thinking behind this forecast from WW at 20:48:
"Heavy showers are now moving in to the Auckland area however the strong winds should see them move through quickly. Squally conditions may see isolated wind gusts to 110km/h, strong enough to cause minor damage."
The upper trough has passed through. The upper flow looks a relatively flat W/SW with quite limited vorticity advection - and if there is any it will be AVA. Instability is on the slide, and I see little in the way of convergence for forcing or organisation of showers. If there were to be squalls they would have been earlier today when there was actually some CVA present ahead of the upper trough and a more unstable flow.

Re: Strong, Cold Southwest Flow over NZ - 18th-20th July
I was in the bath when the SW went through. Dropped from 10.7C(0.1C below today's max)to 7.6C when I got out.
Coming onto rain now, only scattered though.
Just thinking. I wish I was in the bath when the earthquake came through. Even though I never felt it, if I was in the bath it could of been interesting to watch the water motions
