Had a heavy squally snow shower maybe 2 hours back.

Unofficial Dunedin weather stations have favourable temperatures and dewpoints for snow so those reports are not too surprising.
Conditions at Invercargill must be very unpleasant at the moment!

"Heavy showers are now moving in to the Auckland area however the strong winds should see them move through quickly. Squally conditions may see isolated wind gusts to 110km/h, strong enough to cause minor damage."

The upper trough has passed through. The upper flow looks a relatively flat W/SW with quite limited vorticity advection - and if there is any it will be AVA. Instability is on the slide, and I see little in the way of convergence for forcing or organisation of showers. If there were to be squalls they would have been earlier today when there was actually some CVA present ahead of the upper trough and a more unstable flow.
While I'm not surprised you don't agree with a WeatherWatch forecast (as you tend to disagree with most comments on our site...and in this forum) I live in Auckland and can verify that this afternoon and evening we experienced several short squalls in which rain was heavy and winds jumped from 40km/h to gale with gusts easily over 90km/h in seconds. They were brief however but there none-the-less. Have a pleasant night.

I don't disagree with "most" comments on the site or the forum.
90km/h gusts this afternoon sound reasonable, the airport had 40Kt gusts at 4PM.
I know it's late but if you read my post my issue was with "squalls" beyond 9PM, not before. The upper trough came through roughly at 6PM, after that the instability fell away and any mechanism for squalls diminished. Squalls and gusts before this time seemed quite reasonable.

I'm new to this forum and it's good to see so many avid weather watchers.

Glitz i think the days are long gone when people cant give scores about sport etc. Sky has been around for 15 years and all media gives scores without warning at anytime. I know it's frustrating but it's a fact of life.

Nice sunny day in Marlborough this morning. Quite cool though.

This side of town (Dunedin) we had a light dusting overnight along with the high winds. And dusting seems the right word: very little moisture, rather dry and powdery, and maybe 0.5 cm in the sheltered nooks and crannies. Temps have been hovering between 0 and 1 most of the night.

Yep lightest dusting of snow i've seen. So the cantab's shouldn't get too jealous.
I'm in abbotsford and its been clear the last 2.5 hours, but looks like some decent shower-cloud coming over our way from maungatua/taieri area.

Bigtime lull-action here again. Freezing sw and clear skies. Barometer has been steady the last few hours though, hoping we get another burst of showers late this afternoon.

Umm... winds have been more from the west in Akld today - probably strongest on the Waitemata where they were tipping gale-force earlier, but seem to have eased a little now.

Still managed 3.9 hours of sunshine yesterday btw, despite the odd blustery shower.
