Been windy here today but not on the scale I thought it may of been considering the 34th anniversary of the Big Blow as I mentioned on another thread.

Hopefully it will stay flat ie no ugly big troughs move to the east across the north island towards the chathams.

There 'could' be that high this WE that should trim the SW around Auckland.Michael wrote:Hopefully it will stay flat ie no ugly big troughs move to the east across the north island towards the chathams.

I left a windy, but not unusually so, Waddington at around 1pm and drove to Springfield (approx 14km to the West) and it was absolutely howling there. Very strong gusts. Everyone in the (new) cafe in Springfield was gasping at them! On the drive back, the winds dropped considerably once we were back around Annat/Sheffield.

Doesn't blow there as much as Windwhistle near the Rakaia River which would have to be the windiest spot in NZMoorfNZ wrote:I left a windy, but not unusually so, Waddington at around 1pm and drove to Springfield (approx 14km to the West) and it was absolutely howling there. Probably blowing from down through the gorge where the railway goes?MoorfNZ wrote:I left a windy, but not unusually so, Waddington at around 1pm and drove to Springfield (approx 14km to the West) and it was absolutely howling there. Re: Spring like NW/SW flow from Mid July- Early August!!
There was some real strong gusts today from the westerly quarter, possibly the strongest out of all these windy days.
You can always tell the difference between the westerly and a NWer, the westerly tends to be more colder where as the NWer is warmer.
Just wondered why this might be?.
Looks like a few more NW attackers to come this week, maybe some rain late Tuesday/ early Wednesday.

The westery is more a wsw on the coast coming from down south a bit more but the flow gets straiterned up as its get forced over the mountains.

Yes, the Easterlies look to be on the way back with high preasure perhaps becoming established to the E/SE of NZ.

Re: Spring like NW/SW flow from Mid July- Early August!!
It looks like tomorrow's North westerly belt could have some sting in it, should be some beafy CB's on the west coast as it goes NW then W-SW rather quickly.
I see MS have included a low risk out east for Thunderstorms tomorrow, obviously taking note of what happened a few weeks ago when there was that wind shift between NW/SW amongst the spillover material.
I would bring the possibility of perhaps an isolated thunderstorm with the SW change tomorrow afternoon/evening, but since its more SW then it may well be very coastal.
As others have pointed out the flow gets tilted more North to NE by the end of this week, as a stationary system gets squeezed between highs and another system to the NE of the NI one to watch.

For the North island, how much wind can we expect ahead of this front? im contemplating going to the moutnain for the morning then staying up there until it arrives. looks like the front doest arrive until after midday. Wind is now my only concern.

Re: Spring like NW/SW flow from Mid July- Early August!!
Just had a brief splash of rain from the west, only spoty stuff though but still something.
Strong gusty Northerly winds from about 5am but its now dropped back to dead calm, i dont think the actual front has crossed yet and doesnt until midday.
I wouldnt worry about the frosts possibly only get a few days of it on Thursday/Friday, then its milder weather again from then on with a N-NE flow and welcome rain.

Re: Spring like NW/SW flow from Mid July- Early August!!
Looks like the high is sitting right over New Zealand in a couple of days and dominating our weather against the low. The low may make it into Northland briefly on Monday but the subtropical low path has backed right away as the high is now well and truly in the driving seat. Looks dry still as far as I can see for us here in Christchurch/Canterbury with the exception of few brief showers later this evening possible.
Beautiful outside. Very spring like! at 12:20pm it was 13 degrees with high cloud dominating and now the sun is out and we are at now 12:50pm and 16.6 degrees and very light NNE.
Now 17.5 degrees with a WSW becoming gusty atm. Maybe this is the change on the way.

Re: Spring like NW/SW flow from Mid July- Early August!!
Wind is all over the place today, it picked up fresh and gusty N-NE before around 35kmh at times now its calm again .
SW change isnt here yet Mark as going by the 12pm readings it wasnt even SW in Dunedin yet, so still on its way up but through Southland now.
Low topped CU floating across from the west and doing its usual development towards the Peninnsula.
This forum is getting frustratingly slow .

Re: Spring like NW/SW flow from Mid July- Early August!!
Yes Jason. It is all over the show. Your right. We Had 30km.h WSW here and now we have a Northwester that is gusting in bursts and then dead calm. It fooled me. I thought it was too early for the change with it not due through till late this evening.
Down to 16.8 again now.

It feels more like 20 out there in the hot sun. Very little wind atm and humidity only 40%. Currently 17 degrees with a 5km/h NW. The ground is actually very dry lol
