Re: General August Weather
Yes, does look quite intense doesnt it! I come back to Christchurch tomorrow. In Westport we have dull skies and drizzle patches at the moment. Turning to rain sometime soon is the forecast. I may come back here mid next week since it uni holidays as the latest model run shows very big low in southern tasman next Tuesday with very heavy rain for the west at the start of the system. So the plan would be come over here to Westport than get back to Christchurch the day it turns Southerly at the backer end of the system! Could be very interesting due to such a large low area early next week. See how it unfolds! Last couple of days have been very muggy with 16 degrees and a 20km SW breeze. Seems more like Upper North Island Weather.

Re: General August Weather
I don't know if the metar observations for Christchurch have been stuck on mist/fog for the last 2-3 days but it seems you guys have been getting rather alot of both of late, is this right? Today is the first day in a while the Christchurch metar hasn't shown mist/fog since around Saturday, maybe Friday.
Looks as though the peak in the Long wave trough is forecast to finally start to move eastwards again and head away from the SW of WA towards NZ with the models forecasting it to reach you in around 10 days, which I am hoping is right as it'll mean I'll experience the kind of weather I want when I get there next Monday, nice and cold with snow falling lower than the 1500-2000m asl its been hanging around at for a month or so. I can't remember seeing the snow depths at Mt Hutt fall so much during August before, although I am sure they have in previous years similar to this.

Re: General August Weather
There has been drizzly/light rain since Friday Tim infact quite thick at times so thats possibly why the radars managed to pick it all up.
Rain started here around 3pm and its still raining, 10.3mm so far light to moderate falls.
Spring bulbs are loving the rain, got some more Tulips coming through quite quickly now.

Have had 9 nights in a row here where the temperature has stayed in double digits, and tonight looks like it may be the 10th!

Re: General August Weather
Another mild morn with the low 13C. A nice change from what we were getting a month ago!
Looks like this trough hangs around us all day with high overcast and patchy rain.

Re: General August Weather

As I was saying;
As I drove down the Island, lots of water flowing down streams and across some roads in Central HB down to Dannevirke, much needed though as they haven't had moisture to this extent for a few weeks.
Was interesting to see as the back of the front was moving up the country and I drove out of the rain and into blue skies from Kapiti to home.

Re: General August Weather
On Sunday, MetService expected Thursday to only reach 13°C in Akld, but have since revised that to a more normal 15°C.
And yes, both T-maxs and T-mins at Akld Aero have been above normal for the last 10 days. Akld Aero's average T-min so far this month is about 1.1°C above the 1971-2000 average. And only 3 days have seen T-maxs marginally below the norm, with the current average being about 0.7°C above normal. Sunshine's also up and rainfall down.
Similar story in the other 3 North Island main centres, with Tauranga and Wgtn even more warmer than normal. In Chch and Dunedin the average T-max is also above normal, rainfall down, sunshine about normal in Dunedin, but way down in Chch.

Re: General August Weather
On Saturday 17th Kelburn recorded a Tmax of 19.3C, the highest ever for August at either Kelburn or its predecessor sites, records going back to the 1860s (Aero had a faint sea breeze and was a bit cooler - haven't checked on its highest August value). Other readings that day were 19.9C at Wallaceville EWS and 20.6C at Paraparaumu Aero EWS.

Re: General August Weather
Interesting RWood (think you mean Saturday the 15th though ). That was also Akld Aero's highest Tmax this month with 17.4°C (not exactly an Aug record). Lowest Tmax was 14.3°C on the 9th - wonder if today might be lower?

Oops, my mental 1-day adjustment from the 16th went in the wrong direction!

Re: General August Weather
Probably should've also noted that on the 15th, Whenuapai Aero recorded 18.5°C. Of the 15 or so 'official' Akld sites, this was only topped by Penrose with 19.7°C (Penrose usually records the regions highest Tmax) and Kumeu with 19.1°C.
Interesting to note that yesterday, 18°C was touted as being Aklds Tmax. This would've been based on that rare occasion when Whangaparaoa Peninsular topped MetService's 3 Akld sites with 18.3°C - Whenuapai Aero recorded 16.9°C and Akld Aero 16.0°C.

Reached 18.8°C here today, although a very brief shower in the afternoon was a surprise.

Re: General August Weather
was on the mountain today, no wind and no clouds until about 2.30 when some cloud rolled over but still no wind at all. the rate the snow is receding is crazy. it badly needs a big dump.

I can certainly see that Michael all the way from here, seems to have hit a stable layer atm, and the DP is not in its favor.
