I see a thunderstorm near Greymouth, the lightning has got weaker as the day got on it seems. (The amount of strikes anyway)

I see the storm tracker has picked up a couple of strikes in the last half hour in Christchurch City too which is weird!

Re: Warm, windy, & thundery end to August!!!
Trackers are never overly accurate Mark so often it will plot strikes in the wrong areas, maybe the closer strikes are more on the western foothills perhaps.
Yes oh well the wind warning is now lifted , i see the weather watch site said winds were up to 70kmh in canterbury today i just dont see how that would be possible unless its very isolated.
Still with the barometer very low anything could happen when the rain sweeps through later on.

Re: Warm, windy, & thundery end to August!!!
Well i can say that its hardly a breath of wind here at all, in fact its a lovely night out, not cold at all
i see that the pressure is at 978.4hpa so that is very low.
Some how me thinks this whole system is going to just fizzle out.

Re: Warm, windy, & thundery end to August!!!
Hey Jase - yeah it was pretty isolated - Richard Green and I didn't think the winds would be too bad over Canterbury - except maybe Kaikoura. Gusts to 70km/h were recorded 15mins inland from Chch and also at Kaikoura. Similar wind speeds at Akaroa...but Chch barely got to 50km/h. Looks like the wind warnings were perhaps a bit too high... strongest I saw today was 131km/h on Mt KauKau in Wellington...mind you some of those ranges around Wairarapa and Hawkes Bay (where we dont have weather stations) may be reaching 140km/h tonight - some of the exposed roads for example. Very warm and quiet up here in Auckland - although Brian you're probably being blown around out there in the West?

Re: Warm, windy, & thundery end to August!!!
N'erlys have got really blustery here in the last couple hours - mean-winds at least 94 km/h in the outer-Gulf at 12am (up from 54 km/h since 9pm), 70 km/h at Tiritiri and 106 km/h through the Colville Channel. Around 52 km/h in the Waitemata Harbour and 69 km/h up at Cape Reinga (76 km/h at 9pm).
Rain only light though - 2mm earlier this morn and another 7mm since this arvo.

not wrong there Nev. Wind is pounding the windows here at times. I see its gusting to 69km/h at my parents and mean speeds sitting around 55km/h.

Re: Warm, windy, & thundery end to August!!!
Try this again.... was on about 20 mins ago... then had to log off when I heard something crash outside... investigated what the crash was and it was one of my planter pots knocked over by the wind out on the deck... anyway...
Good howling. gusty, blustery morning... yes, the wind has got me up at this ridiculous hour.... and, being that I have super sensitive hearing... needless to say I am a tad wee bit cross with the wind for rudely waking me up at such a hour, here comes the rain again... and another blast of wind.
Well going to find my earplugs... and... going to rest... take care everyone.
Oh, before I sign off... I remembered, honestly Phil you must go to bed... look at that time... look (grin) anyway, bless you for your dedication to weather (smile) it is appreciated... take care.

Re: Warm, windy, & thundery end to August!!!
we got 107kmh gusts last night here , at around 2am (58 knots) , averaging 35 knots
we got our wind turbine commisioned, and it has produced 3.3kwh in the 6 hours since (from midnight)
ps, the very rough kaipara bar shows up well on the rain radar at the moment

Re: Warm, windy, & thundery end to August!!!
Some good much needed rains over Canterbury this morning, 9mm so far with at least another hours worth to go.
Strong winds never arrived in this area last evening,i knew early afternoon that they wouldnt because the wind at the time was blowing directly from the north, which in this area will never reach the speeds that the MS where saying.

Re: Warm, windy, & thundery end to August!!!
We ended up with exactly 5 inches (125mm) - calm now and sun looking like appearing soon.
We have had close to 9 inches last 7 days - time for a break ??????

Re: Warm, windy, & thundery end to August!!!
30mm and a max gust of 78.8 km/h and a 64.4 km/h max average at my parents. As i type the average is around 65. Oh wait just had a new gust of 79.6km/h. Think that might be a new record for me.
Could be an interesting flight. love a bumpy ride.
dad just rung and asked how fast the wind was. He was just finishing milking and stuff went everywhere, and a door got blown in on the 80km/h gust.

Re: Warm, windy, & thundery end to August!!!
19mm of rain overnight and just in the past 3 or 4 hours. The rain woke me up infact! Heaviest of it saw 2.4mm fall in a 10 minute period. Rather surprising.

I see mean-winds at the Manukau Heads were around 85 km/h at 3am with the more W'erly change.Manukau heads observer wrote:we got 107kmh gusts last night here , at around 2am (58 knots) , averaging 35 knots
Winds probably peaked around midnight in the Gulf last night. At 6am, W'erly's were still tipping gale-force further out though, and also up N at Cape Karikari.

Re: Warm, windy, & thundery end to August!!!
Just been into town and back and the avon is running high, infact one area on the verge of breaking its bank. The heathcote at Spreydon Primary has broken some of its bank as well. Haytons road should be shut to traffic, I have just driven through there and it felt like I left the road it was that deep, not to mention the flow across the road into a rapdily running ditch. I have taken a video of this, an oncoming vechicle created a choppy/wavy feeling and I was worried was going to get stuck! I will post the video a little later on! 19mm in 3 hours caused this. Clearing quickly to the south and rain stopped around 730am. wind should turn back around and head for a mild 18 degrees.

I'll attest to those gusts.. some of the most violent winds out of this whole system struck here just on 8am, have never seen concrete powerpoles sway like that in all my years of stormchasing.Manukau heads observer wrote:gusts to 61 knots (112kmh) here with the front passage just before 8am
