Looks as if some heavy shower activity moved through Canterbury just inland of the city this morning and now a little more coastal in North Canterbury outskirts. The NNE breeze here is very fresh and gusty now. Up to 15 degrees. Gusting to 45km/h average speed of 20km/h. The winds are greater than they were on Sunday already

Wind has slightly backed off here at the moment, But certainly some good gusts before.
Looks like a thunderstorm about Southland currently and going by the 10am radar, and i see MS have amended a low risk of severe thunderstorms down south too.
Yes Andrew very wispy windswept looking clouds.

Issued by MetService at 01:07 pm Tuesday 01 September 2009
Valid until 07:00 am Wednesday 02 September 2009
This watch affects people in the following weather forecast districts:
Clutha
Southland
Fiordland
Stewart Island

A very strong unstable westerly flow covers the southern South Island with squally thunderstorms.

About Southern Fiordland, Stewart Island, coastal Southland and the Catlins area, some of the squalls from these thunderstorms may be damaging with gusts reaching 120km/hr at times today (Tuesday) and overnight.

Wind gusts of this strength can cause some structural damage, including damage to trees and power lines, and may make driving hazardous especially for high-sided vechicles and motorcycles.

The wind gusts should start easing from about 3am Wednesday.

[-X The only posts which have been deleted or edited are the ones asking for this thread to be changed! Initially it was suggested the posts about today's weather be put in a September thread, since the old thread referred to the end of August. So I did that. 8) Then Jasestorm asked if they could be put back into this thread as they were part of a specific event, :? so I did that, and changed the title of the thread to reflect that it is an event thread, not an end of the month thread. :fail: OK? :banghead:

Sorry Tony it wasnt meant to cause any problems, i just thought that because the W-SW was meant to continue for a few days yet that we may as well lump it into this one until Thursday.
Then that way its easier to find for future refference, the general September weather i thought was created for when the weather wasnt so rough ie ( High pressure, fine calm days ).

"Interesting" weather is on the way out over the next few days anyway. Perfect! Get rid of those ridiculous thunderstorms and winds, and give us more sunshine. If the forecast works out well, Wellington should have a decent day tomorrow.

Not that we can complain about lack of sunshine here - a complete turnaround from July, with the area of greatest deficiency in July (Kapiti-Wellington-Wairarapa) being part of the one with the greatest surplus in August. On the other hand it looks as if Central Otago has had its 4th straight month of deficient sunshine.

I see snow has fallen down to about 400-450m level around Queenstown, the last decent low level snowfall of the year I'm guessing.

Impressive pool of Cb over SW NZ for the last 24hrs.

Great morning in Invercargill. Had a wicked bout of thunder around 4 am, intermittently continuing since then. Heavy hail showers, with some sleet mixed in. Had a good flurry around 8am with large heavy flakes coming down pretty consistently for about 10 minutes.

Would probably be quite interesting to head 10 - 15 minutes inland, may do that later on.
