Check out how quickly it set in over Hanmer Springs on this webcam, looks like it just started straight off as snow no rain.

It is in all likelyhood warm advective snow...we won't see any, but inland areas (as posted) will, for sure...

After all that it looks like a giant fizzer here. Partly clear skies, warming up, no wind. This event looks like its been overplayed a little, at least here
It looks like all the moisture suddenly disappeared out of the system.

The noise on my roof confirms it didn't fizzle out too much here...

Pouring out there at the moment, hail laced in it as well.
The models suggest that tomorrow will see more rainfall for us than today. I think the band will grow a little and intenify somewhat, nothing major but more pesistent rain for the large of tomorrow. Looks like some decent rain in a few days as well.Razor wrote:After all that it looks like a giant fizzer here. Partly clear skies, warming up, no wind. Re: Unsettled Period Late September 2009
Very isolated showers but also very steady intermixed with graupel/sleet at times.
This suggests the snow level is much lower than the forecast 500m come off it MS , if its still this cold tomorrow there could be some reasonable snow falls inland.
RE: Tony's comment the webcams from 4pm definatly showed snow flakes falling in front of it, the temperature will be wrong i would say.

Re: Red Dawn (NOT the movie...)
hazy here, but probably just salt spray, this morning
but my satellite internet connection (low in the sky) has been very flakey since yesterday afternoon.....must be the dust (as heavy rain does affect it too)

Re: Red Dawn (NOT the movie...)
Yes it is dust. Auckland looks a bit like one of those polluted northern hemisphere cities this morn. Airport metar calling it dust.

Re: Red Dawn (NOT the movie...)
can just make out a reddish tinge now , against the hills....if I use my imagination...LOL
the rain we have had with this shower line has probably cleaned it up a bit here, compared to further east, in front of this 2ndd front...i.e the dust is between the 2 fronts

Moved the above dust comments to here, simply because, although the dust originated from Oz, these obs are very much NZ related and coincide with earlier discussions in this thread.

Re: Unsettled Period Late September 2009
Only 15mm rain in the last 24hrs. It felt like more than that. As for the dust from Aus, it was very obvious on the car's windscreen this morning, as it was around 11pm last night. The windscreen had some pronounced brown streaks running down it, and whilst driving thru rain on the way to work there was still enough dust coming down with the rain to give the same effect as if following close behind a large truck on a wet road.

Yes, a very pronounced haze in the air here now that clouds have cleared - even smells sort of musty.
A mere 4mm here yesterday compared to Akld Aero's 17.6mm.

Can't notice anything here, apart from worse visibility than normal (which may be due to the very high humidity)

Re: Unsettled Period Late September 2009
I woke up at various times of the morning to heavy rain on the roof and i mean fair chucking it down, rain gauge doesnt do justice as most of the rain is horizontal due to the wind.
Strong gusty NE this morning with occasional dolops of showers but intermixed with drizzle.

Re: Unsettled Period Late September 2009
Goodmorning,
I took this pic about half an hour ago... I do not know if it is dust from the recent dust storm in Australia... it's very orange.. anyway posting it.
Currently 17.4 C out... hazy, overcast skies here in the bay area.
