Thunderstorms Sept 24th-25th

Unread post by Nev »

Thought it might be an idea to have a separate thread for these T-Storms.

Yes, MetService have a moderate risk of severe T-Storms for the upper North Island as the cold front moves over this afternoon and evening, with possible squally gusts to 120 km/h and a chance of a few small tornadoes. They also have a high risk of T-Storms tomorrow with the following trough.

3PM AK radar looks like the line will dump a lot of rain over the West and South Auckland areas and will skim past the CBD maybe. Jealous of your dewpoints up there!

Still cloudy, dry and cold here in Chch city. Don't think it will change much apart from scattered rain developing tonight.

Hmm... didn't hear anything and rain not so heavy here, but it sure has got gusty.

Quite a few CG's on the tracker as the T-Storms went through...

im not suprised if it rained out by the time it got to east auckland - in the central it was like a swimming pool falling from the sky. those drops had to be 1cm across, at the surface! i cant imagine what kind of updrafts were keeping them going to get that size.

Yes a nice line there and I'm sure this will persist as its moving into fairly moist environment. But the upper wind flows are modeled to weaken so I don't think there will be a robust lightning show with this line. Daytime heating tomorrow should intensify thunder activity over Waikato/BOP in particular.

The midday tommorow map looks ideal for thunderstorms in Waikato to me. Metservice have got a high chance of thunderstorms all day and it looks like a trough will pass over around the hottest part of the day. Though this is my extremely uneducated (and hopeful) estimate.

Nuts here around 3pm.. took both cars in for WOF's and when swapping I heard some buzz's on the AM radio.. saw the flashes and wham down it came, serious surface flooding from buckland all the way up to paerata.. numerous rat runs in pukekohe were close to impassable due to the sheer volume of water falling from the sky, incredible.. havent driven through a dump like that since i was in queensland.

I am thinking tomorrow is a Non-event, LI is not good for tomorrow basing this on my forecast and GFS too, and as these fronts/troughs have a habit of weakening when they come to shore.
I think the best we will get is just thundershowers which is like a 1 clap wonder.
I can only hope that this changes, but i am not holding my breath.

Great pano spwill _b

Well I never heard thunder any/or sighted any lightning activity here at all today... the only exciting thing that happened that I can report was a spell of heavy localized rain as we drove from Kaitaia back east towards the bay. There was surface flooding in paddocks, yes, though I have seen it worse, it will be interesting to see what tommorrow brings, take care.

Lightning in NZ
The right terminology lends a hint as to the nature of the different forms.

Looking at the way that low is winding up out in the tasman.. mother nature reminding us to put the clocks forward, a couple of days in advance perhaps? :B

Still a thunderday to mark down for this season.
