Actually we did have a large wind gust at 11:17, 63 km/hr here, I wonder what was going on there?

Re: Unsettled Period Late September 2009
Persistent light to moderate rain here in Karori with light winds. Going off the radar, heavier falls look to be streaming down from the north towards the strait over the next couple of hours.

Im in Hamilton. Was in town when it all came through. Heard about 5 rumbles of thunder and had torrential rain. Back at my parents water is running off the paddocks.

Herald saying it was a nader that hit Ramarama.. definately on the back edge of that storm that came over, it got pretty wild here for a period with total whiteout rain conditions & surface flooding around.. wouldnt surprise me if it really was one.

yes, that particular Cb was nasty looking, i remember noting that it was visibly unstable looking underneath as it passed over greenlane.

far out we just got pummeled by some serious rain here at my parents. Was certainly being chucked down at a rate. Very quick 10mm making 24.8mm for the day since 9am. Rain rate just got to 2.3mm/h not long ago.

Re: Unsettled Period Late September 2009
been talking to my brother....he is only 1.5km away !
he said he had rain coming in torrrents.....recorded 26 knots of wind (lots of trees around) but did not know about a small tornado just up the road!
it sure looked black out to east of here at the time!
the sky does have an orange tinge to it here when looking towards the west and near the sun...

Re: Unsettled Period Late September 2009
Can vouch for the dust, did the same thing in oz, blew over with the change. Only difference from the other day is I can actually taste it this time
Sure was a whopping amount of rain coming down this morning, wave after wave of torrential coming down turning the paddocks full of water and gouging out the driveway down there about 1/2 inch deep. Visibility next to zero at the time.

Re: Unsettled Period Late September 2009
On the way into uni this morning, hit torrential rain in Newmarket just after 9am, I also observed a very heavy downpour at Auckland uni around 9.40am. Typically weakened as it headed east, as I came home and not even 4mm recorded.
Hopefully will see a thunderstorm tomorrow, haven't had a decent one for months here

Upper Hutt ... 1700hrs NZDT ...
Front well and truely passed now to the east 10mm rainfallin recent hours .. .ppp 1000mb and very slightly rising .. .winf nnw ... sky is very stratiform with clearing orographic low coud... Very Katabatic in apprearance ... The colder more unstable airmass will approach from the NW tomorrow from the almost cut off low in the Tasman .. with showers and fine spells I expect. The classic frontal systems dont appear here very often ... Latitude is far too low.

Re: Unsettled Period Late September 2009
Just been for a drive to have a look at Ramarama.. Interesting damage trail about 40m wide and ~ 1km long, branches stripped off many trees and several uprooted, no damage to powerlines, some roofing off and wrapped around trees over the road... Now I didn't see the house that lost it's whole roof so it's possible there was another area of more severe damage! Should be good 6pm news coverage TV3 and 1

Tv3 had good coverage...I missed the TV1 coverage
tv3 quoted M/S as saying it would have been a down burst
was there evidence of rotating winds Ricky?

Re: Unsettled Period Late September 2009
Possible Severe thunderstorms are predicted tomorrow, A sunny morning is expected too, if this proves true the temps may get past 20°C and this will help if any T-storms start occurring.
The "hot" hours are 2 PM and 4 PM. LI is expected reach a whopping -8.6 at 2 PM.
This a very impressive day to come, DP is expected to be around 14-17°C and this will help with the moisture content.
The forecast is subject to change but it is a notable day.
I have attached a Skew-T for reference, looks nice!
Skew-ts and forecasts update here http://wx-matangi.dyndns.org/Matangi_We ... ecast.html at 3AM, 6 AM, 9 AM, 12 AM, 3 PM, 6 PM and 10 PM.
