General October Weather

No heatwaves to start October, in fact gfs suggests unseasonably cold over the country next week as an intense anticyclone south of Tasmania dredges up polar air for NZ. Looks like the return to winter kicks off over the weekend with snow looking possible to 400m from Fiordland to south Otago.

I saw that, looks positively cold Sunday night. I thought September usually saw the last of the truely cold Antartic air. Lets hope the cold air has other effects enjoyable to our weather watching.

Looks like a similar situation to that about a month ago, when a southeasterly brought snow as far north as the tops of the Kaimais. (might want to get your binoculars out)
Last year, the last Antarctic blast over NZ was in November.

Scatterd weak CU about being capped off at a certain level and shearing over from the strong westerly high up.
Earlier on it was a strong gusty westerly now its light W-SW.
A few showers now appearing from these clouds here and there, must be the passage of the first cold front.
If you want to see some flurries tomorrow you might not have to go far maybe Cashmere hill suburbs.

Had a few brief spots of rain from a shower that got torn up by the returning westerly, and looks like a hail shower out to sea with some nice long white shafts and a rainbow.

Some dark clouds about outer Banks Peninsula - 5pm radar confirms showers just offshore.

Its still hovering between 17-18C now :D :D .
I sense summer and the smell of cooking Bangers on the BBQ are getting closer _b

A sunny 18.8°C here and Ricky has 18.9°C. The TV temps supplied by MetService are often higher than Akld Aero - possibly an average of Akld Aero, Whenuapai and Whangaparaoa.
