So it's 4-5 degrees and raining steadily, surely it will be snowing on Pirongia? It is over 800m above sea level isn't it?

Just had a report of snow/sleet/hail on the Kaimai's.

6.3° C outside at the mo here, Kaimai Summit from memory is 500m, I could believe it.

Yip 959m asl. Te Aroha is 952m asl and a lot quicker to hike up than Pirongia. Climbed them both, been on top of Mt Te Aroha when it was snowing would like to do it again and have tomorrow off so......

Mod note: I have now split and merged from three threads for this system.
I think in the future, the General Weather threads should be discussion of non-severe weather only and it would help moderators a bit for users to be more proactive in starting new threads up for weather events. (Saves a split and then confusion).

Hamilton AP, Matangi and Horsham Downs all only got up to 8C on Monday. That would have to be an October record. Also probably the same for quite a number of North Island locations!

Edit: Go the Black Caps!!!!

Morning... well it's feeling very wintery like in the far north this morning. the moon is out illuminating the countryside in a magical silvery glow ... overnight recorded min 6.5 C out - it is now currently 7.0 C out.

Morning Jase

Thank's, I took this pic last week during last weeks thunderstorm, and, because Andrew could not be here to chase that storm... ( I just wish all of you could have been here to chase it ) I wanted to gift Andrew something special from the storm.

CU congestus *smiles* I'm learning all the time weather... thank you, I will never forget the name of these clouds it's locked in - here's a link to the original image (scaled down and un-cropped) - take care.

Ruapehu Alpine Lifts marketing manager Mike Smith said he doubted much of the snow would be left when the storm eased off, as the wind was so strong it was stopping the snow from settling on the ski-fields.

"It will drift into the gullies and valleys."
maybe not so good for you snow bunnies

heck, this snow event will go down in history
farmers are reporting its the worse they have seen it....for a long time...and its lasted alot longer than normal for the time of year too

It will melt quick though the snow on Pirongia I would say with the strong heating from the sun this time of year
temperature just getting up to 10C here now slowly

Must've been some further showers overnight, as there was a dusting of snow above about 500m on west side of Akaroa Harbour. (but has now melted)

Perhaps when the weather gets really boring, we should have another 'get-together', that or have Foggy come over again for a break, im trying to work out which of the 2 evils contributed to this ;)

I see metservice forecasting snow to 500m in the deep south on Friday but to 300m in Canterbury. Looks like some decent rain Friday at this stage so the chance of heavy snow above 300m for the hill country and plains. May see some sleet on the hills. Also, a big area of polar air brewing in the southern ocean that may hit parts of the south in a weeks time. Long way out though.
