Re: System 9-10th October
Things do seem to be shaping up very nicely indeed, who here thinks we will see snow in the city tomorrow?
Because by sounds of it all i wouldn't be at all surprised.
With 6C max temp i am gathering majority of day will only be around 3 or 4C witch is freezing!!
Anyhow wait and see i guess, we are going to enjoy this rain whatever happens.. just hope its fine saturday for my first game!

Re: System 9-10th October
Was raining quite well when I drove from Kirwee to Chch about 45 mins ago. Not looking forward to the possibility of snow, I have to drive home at some point...

Re: System 9-10th October
Yup, best chance of the year to date for sure. Plenty of precipitation and I agree with Jase here. Also, snowfalls are almost sure to be heavy inland Canterbury so Helen will be happy! I will be going for a drive, MIke will be joining us tomorrow night! It would be great if we didnt need to drive and it came to us though! Temp is going down steady. It is now just 6.9 degrees (the minimum of the day). Large rain band too which should intensify and dominate the next 24-36 hours with low level snow developing so fingers crossed!

Re: System 9-10th October
Yeah, coldest air will start to move in after 01:00 Friday, wait for the wind change from N.E. to S.E. It should ramp up then with the wind ,and the temps should really start to drop quickly.MarkThomas wrote:Yup sure is from early morning rain forecast to rapidly turn to snow at 200m so you will almost surely see some Jealous!
Met service seems to be playing it down a tad at the moment, might be waiting for next runs.I'll wait and see what the prognosis is after 10 pm tonight

Fingers Crossed. Helen Keep us up to date with your weather, as we will get an idea for the snow level once it starts snowing at yours.

Temp here now 5degs, rain changed from heavy big globs to fine but steady.
Is there a temp below which it snows? Or do other conditions make temp at which snow falls variable?

Re: System 9-10th October
Not to be a party-pooper or anything, but I am not convinced of anything other than cold rain for CHCH... inland Canty will likely feel the most out of this system, so have fun with the white stuff, Helen et al....Mike/Mark/Jase/Karsh...you will probably need to hop in the car and drive for an hour or so if you want to see the snow falling to low levels.

Re: System 9-10th October
If the precipitation gets heavier again it may turn to wet snow at about 3 to 4 degrees but the change over is usually from about 2 degrees (or less).

Re: System 9-10th October
Hey MoorfNZ i had no idea you were a female, just assumed you were a male excuse me .
One thing ive just noticed is on the link below to the latest isobaric it has the first initial cold front moving towards the warm front and possibly colliding over Hanmer area in a few hours.
This is well before the colder air to the south and the main cold front you can see sitting over the lower south island.
Karsh do you mean 1am or 1pm?.
Here's the link.

Re: System 9-10th October
If not it will be on the ground for sure, i think as these types of scenario's are very hard to know what levels it will snow to its best we say there is a possibility of seeing snow flakes falling at some point tomorrow even if it is for only a few hours.
Remember the evening of the meeting last month simular situation as this one except this one is stronger, snow fell lower than the predicted 500m infact to 200m in the end with sleet/graupel in the city.
Just coming onto good steady rain now can hear it well on the roof, just dashed out to check the rain gauge 5mm so far and the temperature is 6C.

Re: System 9-10th October
You can see the rain band to the north clearly on the last few radars, very steady to heavy falls which will slowly work its way down.
9mm in the rain gauge now which is a good start , currently 4.8C also.
