These warm advective snow events tend to favour inland regions where the snow level drops due to localised mesoscale cooling. Hamner Springs is the perfect spot for it being in a sheltered valley. I have never been to Hamner, today would have been a good day to visit.

This is happening on the Amuri plains also,i'm at 175m and snowing, i wonder if at 175m on the Canterbury Plains it would be snowing?

Also noticed that the radar is only giving aquarate readings for about a 50km radius this morning, its got us as being blue where we should be yellow at least.

Interesting looking at those rain radars especially the latest, looks like Christchurch is getting more steadier rain than out this way.
Its steady in front of Banks Peninnsula and inland so the flow cant be too SE yet, instead more southerly which means the worst is yet to come.
By looking at the forecast maps that may well be the case until the SE flow gets established properly.
This is looking more like an afternoon/evening event especially for inland areas, temperature is still gradually dropping here 2.5C currently.
Come on weve had boring weather all year  except for Januarys thunderstorms :D  .

latest rain radar for CHCH shows good shower activity moving in from the SE , possibly from the original southern ocean cold front?
also, I would say south taranaki through to NP will be in for a humdinger SE gale

I get the message Razor  , nah the forum is really slow today.
It cant be moving north Razor because its coming from the north, the low with the rain bearer is slightly moving down over us.

from the M/S severe weather warning:
A band of heavy rain and snow lies across
northern South Island areas and is moving slowly north.
i.e the low is going to roll over the top of the SI,(actualy pass over the NI) and so will drag what you have there now further north

Would I be right in thinking the event is actually due in Canterbury this afternoon/evening - reports indicate snow warnings in place for later on today...

Is that at the top part of the gondola or the loading section heathcote valley?.
This light rain is abit rediculous if its going to rain it should be better than this, 22mm so far.
Heard a report of the state highway between Blenhiem and Kaikoura could be closed soon due to large slips.

Just got back from Springston and 4cm settled on the ground there and some steady snow. Bit of sleet In Waddington an Shieffild and just rain in Kirwee and West Melton. It looks like the low does push some precipitation further south this afternoon before the southerly dominates the airflow and pushes the system northward. Around 25mm from this system so far. Hardly a breate of wind stll. Rain just starting to pick up a little.

Do you mean Springfield? Springston is near Lake Ellesmere, and near sea-level. If it's snowing there, then it would probably be snowing in Chch.
