Thunderstorms possible in northern regions today
Looking like the atmosphere turns unstable over northern areas this afternoon with the possibility of a few thunderstorms developing. The ideal scenario is for skies to brighten up a bit with some afternoon warming to get the instability numbers up ahead of the windchange/cold front due mid to late afternoon. We can only watch and see what happens.

Looks like daytime heating will be needed, not much TS activity out to sea on the sat pic.
Dewpoints 13C, mild 13C, overcaste, some recent rain.

looking a little more unstable this hour, with a few more lightning strikes in the seas around northland, and even a hook feature on the radar to the west of auckland, associated with one of the strikes.

The centre/axis passes overnight (and tomorrow the southerlies will be establishing) so no heating will occur so it be low at this stage.

that looks like the low center, the hook on the rain radar
could actualy see some blue sky out to my west just before (through the rain)
barometer still dropping fast, now 995
looks like a NW wind change shower line to move in from the NW soon

Re: Thunderstorms possible in northern regions today
to me, this tasman low, is moving SE
which means we are going to get hammered by the winds on the other side
instead of moving NE like the forecast charts are saying

NWer has arrived here now
barometer still dropping
there must be a heck of a strong southerly/SW wind on the other side of this low to come in yet

Re: Thunderstorms possible in northern regions today
More like winter here today , temp mostly around 13C , high was 16C. Thunderstorms out to sea, I guess the land was too cool for thunder with the cloud cover/showers.
