Drove down to northWaikato mid afternoon, saw some very nice Thunderstorm development down there, nice lightning and hail mixed with rain( less than 1cm size). Looks like another line of storms heading for Waikato from the west.

Some Cb photos from this afternoon

Gutted. came out of the cellular dead area to download the latest and saw it had been going off in Tauranga.

Just my luck.

Pleased to see Spwill had some luck today.

My driver observed some lighning and we've driven through a bit of hail, but we've just been in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Hopefully better luck later tonight.

We are heading for Tokoroa and then over the Kaimai's to home.

The family and I went chasing up towards Wanganui this afternoon. I took these photos of a thunderstorm that was just west of Koitiata, near Turakina. I only saw a couple of lightning flashes from it. It followed us all the way back to Palmy.

Good to see all the reports. Storms from Kaitaia to Wellington! I went for a quick trip down the southern motorway when the front exploded mid afternoon over Hunua/Huaraki plains. Saw a number of big CG's/loud thunder. It was great to be in a storm again!

In true frustration style my driver claims to have seen some CC a couple of times in front of us. I guess I'd better get off this and start watching. We are between Putaruru and Te Poi.

Set up the tripod in a convenient spot and did a bit of 1080p HD Video but nothing happened. Sigh. Looking like another bust for now. Just heading up SH29 to the Kaimai Summit.

As we came down the Kaimais I commented that I wouldn't be surprised to see a big CG in front of us. We got one single about 15 secs later.

Then we punched through the heavy rain, but no hail. Suprisingly warm here. Hard to type now it's dark.

We still have a chance of thunderstorms today. The only thing i can see that will hinder today is that the DP will be around 13°C.

Certainly a low thunder risk over most northern areas today, I suggest BOP has a higher risk given its sheltering from the cooling SW. But it does come back to moisture to how much is still around after midday.

I think we should organize a group storm chase a bit later in spring when storms are likely to be slower moving and photogenic. Yesterdays action was moving too quickly in the strong upper flow.

A westerly flow probably would do it rather than a NW one in Taranaki or south of Taumaranui, could be a bit far to travel though.

With such high DP's anything that would happen will likely be high precip, as has been the case with said anvils all morning so far.. drove through a blinder about 40 mins ago, total whiteout for a few minutes.
