Wow, just been out and there's a huge front almost upon us... pics to follow... southerly has also kicked up ahead of it. Looks quite fast moving, very active.

Re: Cool end to October
Wow ive never seen such a fast moving gust front, the most amazing thing as it went through within 5 minutes black CU was towering to the west.
Look at the 8pm radar just like that, even some lightning being picked up i would say around inland Ashburton.
Strong gusty southerly here now averaging 40kmh gusting 50kmh so far.
Although the gust front seemed to be more inland and to the west, i am thinking maybe the penninsula broke up the gust front on the eastern side.

Re: Cool end to October
Headed south and toward the coast from Rakaia, front came through about 7pm(ish) recorded 93 kmph wind gust which I though was pretty impressive, imagine what it would have been like on the coast!

Re: Cool end to October
Bit of a bugger cos we were out there, once the southerly came through it looked so stratusy with no hope of anything firing. Still it's not like there was heaps of lightning or anything, some mobile data might have helped.
Cheers

Re: Cool end to October
Yes you've got a nice phone there, hehe.
One setup we used (Steven Graham mainly speaking) in the past was having a cheap 027 hooked up to a laptop with a data cable, then we dialed in and just looked at direct links of images etc. Worked well and was cheap, costing 2 or 3 dollars max per chase. Sat images are ok (weatherzone speaking mainly) but radars are a little more difficuilt, direct links to other sources apart from metvuw ones are hard as the links have no uniformity to them.... it's all just random numbers and letters. In the past we had only 3 hourly ones anyway, but to get one hourly would help! Spose I'll just pay an extra couple of bucks and look at a whole page if I did get something like this going, lol.
Thing is I need to get a laptop so I can do it, one of those little ones would do nicely I think. Just so I can view web pages and store photos on etc. Have an 027 but it doesn't have the data slot, might need to get a new one of those. But this all costs money, bahh I should just let loose and buy one! haha!
Yes Spwill these systems seem to come and go quickly, days like earlier in Jan this year were nice though where we got to follow a storm for a fair amount of time. The 5th and 6th Jan 2006 was awesome, minimum of 2 hours following the one storm, need more of those.
Cheers

Re: Cool end to October
HUGE hail shower here at the moment with very squally gusts. Another 26mm from this system to go with the 38mm from the one a day ago. Some snow on top of port hills. Sleeting here at the moment, some nice flakes intermixed!
